D C. -Students ol French politics, and those who have read Dickens' "Tale Of Two Cities," know that Parisian paving blocks have at times been riot weapons and barricade material. Few know, however, that these same, blocks can keep a baby warm. That discovery was made by a French friend of Donald William Dresden, author of ao article "Parii. Home Town of the World," in a national magazine. Dresden writes of his friend's desperation during a cold winter. Conventional fuel was expensive and the young father was not rich. Around the corner from, his apartment, apart-ment, the street was paved with wood block. Pollrempa net Gendarme One night ht stealthily filled a sack willi the blocks, only to have a policeman catch hlrn. The fuel gatherer protested his baby was cold. The policeman looked the other way. . " , ' Let us hope she will be warm, monsieur," he said. "1 have, three cf my own." Paris policemen, it is explained, are not gendarmes, as is widely believed. The men with the pic-Juresqu-StiJluc capes and white dubs are areata de police. , Gaav Urms keep order la rural areas. Dresden writes feelingly of the .majJf.. atfracttons .that Paris ..has for the outsider as well as for-the Parisian, and of the inescapable impression the visitor feels that he is at home in the French capital. He describes life in an apartment on the left bank the Qua! St Michel, near the Rue du Chat Qui Peche the "Street of the Cat Who Fishes' immortalized by Elliot Paul in "The Last Time I Saw Paris." Not far from the apartment is St Germain del Pres and its cafes, the Flore, the Deux Magots and others, where students, American as well as European, settle the grave affairs af-fairs of the world at sidewalk tables. ta-bles. , - . Anderson, who compiled the 'records. Almost 100 persona pledged to donate but several had to be turned away because be-cause of physical conditions. Early hours of the afternoon were slow but after six o'clock ! many of the men came in from work and the group kept working until after 8 p. m. Several Red Cross nurses were there the entire en-tire time with two others helping late in the day with the blood bank. Dr. Delbert R. Hales was the attending physician. Donors first had their temperature temper-ature taken, a pulse count made, blood pressure and blood count, and if these showed any irregular ities further tests were made. Act ual taking; of the blood required only a few minutes and then the donor was sent to the lounge room for a ten minute rest and then to the canteen for refreshments and further rest before going home. Majority of the donors noticed no effect from loss of blood but a few had slightly unpleasant re actions. Mrs. Mark Coddington was re ceptiorUst, Ruth Moss, Shirley Richards and Jeanette Mecham, typists; Mrs. Clifford E. Young, escort; Mrs. Jack Aimee took temperatures and pulse, and Mrs. Delbert R. Hales and Ore Jean Chipman took charge of the label and bottle table. Lucy Robinson, Eunice Watklns and Ella Fraugh-ton Fraugh-ton assisted the nurses in the donor room; Mrs. O. . DeVere Wootton and Mrs. George E. Scott weer the lounge room attendants, and Mrs. Leo R Nelson and Mrs. Stanford Briggs were canteen hostesses. Others who assisted were Mrs. Anderson and Lillie Shatter, representing re-presenting the Red Cross, Melvin V. Frandsen and Don H. Peterson Peter-son from the National Guard who helped getting the equipment set up, and Roberts and Munk who donated. the iee used. -- Cowboy Critics JCowboys with, their high-heeled boots ' go io movies' " on "Saturday" nights, in parts of the west, chiefly to see .western films.
