Show THE AMERICAN FORK CITIZEN THURSDAY, APRIL 13, l955 'AGE EIGHT High School Baseball Team Plays i i Lehi Nine on Local Field Today High school hard ball artists will start the season's swatting festival this afternoon (Thursday) (Thurs-day) when they cross bats with Lehi's nine on the local diamond. The team will play Pleasant Orove on the Viking diamond Monday and will engage the Lincoln nine on the local field Thursday, April 20. Coach Don Overly has six let-termen let-termen back in uniform this year and will build a team around the veterans. Heading the returning letter-men letter-men is Steve Seastrand, pitcher and short stop; Don Mower, catcher; Loyal Iverson, second baseman; Blair Reese, third base- . . 1 in J 1 - 1-1 man , iiiaries buwurua, cgkcucr and outfielder; and Max Pierce, pitcher And outfielder. New pitchers in uniform this year include Kent Walker and Craig Jeffs, who were the star moundsmen in the boys' league last summer. Leonard Dean is another newcomer to the high school varsity who can be counted count-ed on for mound duty. Rookie first basemen include Junior Harris and Carl Ingersoll; De Vaughn Iverson and Kirk Dim-mick Dim-mick are infield prospects; while Norman Hoskings, LeOrande Beck, Don McCormlck and Lehman Leh-man Wall will be trying for positions posi-tions in the outfield. Today's game will get underway under-way at 3:30 p. m., according to Coach Overly, who expects plenty of competition from Coach Earl Holmstead and hli Pioneers. American Fork racked up firsts when Glade Tregaskls won the 100 yard dash and tied with Cooper of Lehi for first place in the low hurdle race. Kale Smith won the broad Jump and the Caveman relay string won the 440 medley. Cool and windy weather chilled the fans and participants during . the meet. Alma Madsen, local enthusiast, laid the ground work for entering the team in competition with Layton, Salt Lake, Murray,- Ogr den, and Provo for the state crown during the coming season. Anyone in the north Utah ccunty area Interested in participating par-ticipating is invited to attend the Friday night meeting which will get underway at 8 p. m. in the city hall. , i The community, its citizens and civic organizations, joined hands Thursday night to fete the 1950 Class B championship team. To climax the' evening, each member of the team was presented present-ed with a handsome wrist watch as were Coaches Don Overly and Leo Nelson. Two-hundred and fifty fans and guests attended the banquet staged in the tabernacle which was "ruled" over by'Hap" Holm- stead, who acted as master of ceremonies. Coach Stan Watts, Brigham Young university, gave the address of the evening Responses were made by Coaches Coach-es Don C. Overly and Leo Nelson. Coach Deb Smith of Payson also gave brief response. Dennis Dixon, Payson captain, presented a large carnation spray that bore the Inscription "state champions to Captain Loyal Iver son. Sportswriters Bill Coltrin, Ray Schwartz, and Hack Miller also gave brief talks. Supt. D. B. Mitchell made a few brief re marks as did Principal Louis Bates of Payson. Gran Ite won 4-0, Lehi 5-0 and Lincoln 3-2 over the locals. A return match will be played with Lehi Wednesday afternoon on the Pioneer courts. Monte Lee, a returning letter- man, is the one bright spot on Coach Don Overly's tennis squad at present. The inexperienced players have looked better in each match and should give a good account of themselves be fore the season is to far along. - Playing singles with Lee are Joe Brown, Kent Abel, and Garth Huggard. Mr. Turner agreed to take year-around year-around movies of the significant features depicting Utah valley's recreational, industrial, agricultural, agricul-tural, educational and commercial commerc-ial life and activity. The movie will be completed in the summer of 1951 and will be available to residents of the valley val-ley as well as people and organizations organi-zations throughout the nation. Signs and advertising for the roads are ready, the committee reported, ant road signs will be placed at the north and south entrances to the valley next week. The committee also reported that road maps will be passed out to service stations, restaurants, and tourist cabins to publicize the scenic areas of Utah valley to the tourists.
