Alma Madsen will direct the pitching bee. Thirty-five dollars will be giv en In cash prizes to the winning tossers. Only residents of Utah county are eligible to participate, according to the rules laid down by the Steel Day Committee. Mr. Madsen states that the qualifying round will be held from 2 to 3:30 p. m. Monday af ternoon, Sept. 5 and each con testant must pitch 50 shoes. The eight players with the highest qualifying scores will compete in the tournament for the prizes which will be staged at 4 p. m. Some of the outstanding play lers in the state live in Utah county and It is the desire of the committee to stimulate more interest in this wholesome and skillful recreation within the boundaries, of Utah county. There is no age limit, or fee required to qualify or pitch in the final tournament, Mr. Mad sen said. Peck-Strong Duet To Feature Radio Stage Show Local Items Mr. and Mrs. George Bingham attended the Uintah Basin reunion re-union held Sunday at Liberty Park, Salt Lake City. Elmer Bate and his grandson Dlik Bate accompanied Mrs. Carl Peterson and sons, Don and Jerry on the return trip to their home in Alboquerque. N. M.. on Tuesday. Mr. Bate and Dick will remain until next week. Rev. and Mrs. Ellas Jones, now of Casa Grande, Ariz., have been house guesta this week of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Binns. Mr. and Mrs. Parley Robinson and Mrs. Reed H. Robinson returned re-turned Sunday from a visit with relatives in Baldwin Park and Santa Monica, Cal. Later they went to Magna to visit with Mr. and Mrs. Merlin Grant and Mr. and Mrs. Rulon Taylor, Miss Minnie Hansen, Duluth Minn., Is visiting for three weeks with her sister, Mrs. Ferrill M. Sorenson, and family. American Fork, and Mr. and Mrs. David Reese, Provo. - - The Intermountain Talent Pa rade will feature Mary Peck, 18, and Wendell Strong, 18, as rep resentatives of American Fork on the stage and radio program on Tuesday, August 30.. at the Utah Theater in Salt Lake City. The Talent program is spon sored by the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce, the Salt Lake Trl bune and Telegram, and the In termountain Network. Each sa lute features a broadcast over stations of the Intermountain Network on each Tuesday at 8 d. m. from the stage of the theater. Each broadcast is di vided into two parts, the first part being the performance of the most talented persons from tne area being saluted. These per formers compete for weekly prlz es and major awards to be made twice during the series. The sec ond part will be an audience par tlclpatlon quiz with the questions based on Information about the area being saluted. The information for the quiz will be taken from a major fea ture of stories and pictures de voted to the honored area and which will be mibltshed In the Sunday Salt Lake Tribune on August 28. The feature for pub llcation has been prepared by the Chamber of Commerce under the direction of Mrs. G. Easton Brown, secretary. Miss Peck was American Fork': Steel Day Queen In 1948, and also entered the "Miss Utah" contest held at the Utah State Fair last fall. She played the leading role in the American Fork High school opera in her senior year and was a member of the Bee thoven club. She attended the BYU last year and is a member of the nationally known, Ameri can Fork High sschool band. She Is the daughter of Mrs. Nan Fer guson. Mr. Strong is the son of Mr, and Mrs. Fred Strong, of Alpine and was chosen representative boy of his senior class last spring. He attended the Rotar ian's Youth conference held in Salt Lake City last year and has also attended Boys' State. Dur lng his senior year he was presi dent of the Beethoven club and a member of the hgih schcrol band. Payson will be featured on the same program witn American Fork and Darrell Rhodes will be narrator for the Talent Parade, representing both Payson and American Fork. C. A. Grant is general chair man of the Talent Parade com mittee, G. Easton Brown is pub licity director and Melvln E. Dunkley Is exhibit chairman. Archie Williams is chairman in charge of the Payson portion of tjxe program. Funeral Services Arranged For Mrs. H. Payne Cora Violet Philips Payne, 56, Highland, died Tuesday at 1:30 p. m. after an extended Illness. The family has lived In Highland for the past tlx years. The daughter of Wlnfleld and Alice Harper Philips, she was bom Feb. 27, 1893, at Marion, Kan. She was married Aug. 5, 1912 to Harry M. Payne She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The family moved to Utah set tling first in Farmlngton. In 1939 they moved to Pleasant Grove, and in 1943 to Highland. Surviving besides the husband are six children, Stanley w, Payne, Salt Lake City; Harry F. Payne. Newport. Minn.: Keith A.
