Show Citizen Athlete of the Week: Steve McFarland By DEAN VON MEMMOTT Through most of American Pork Caveman Steve McFarland's high school scrccer career, he has played half back. That all changed this spring when coach Curtis Craig moved him to center forward. . McFarland says he believes the reasons for the move were "my speed and shots on goal." But according to Craig, there was another reason besides those. . , 'It's important to have somebody some-body up front who is quick and can score, but it's as equally as important impor-tant to have somebody on the front who shows leadership. That's what Steve shows," the coach says. "Steve will come off the field and give observations. It's good for a coach to get a view from a player on what is going on out on the field. I have enough faith in Steve to believe what he is telling me." McFarland says in the recent win over Pleasant Grove, "I tried to compliment them fellow Cavemen on good passes or defensive plays. Hearing compliments make you confident. When you feel confident, you want to play better." Saying positive things to teammates team-mates on the field that day was quite a challenge to him in view of the fact that the Cavemen didn't play as well against the Vikings as they had against the Provo Bulldogs, Bull-dogs, whom American Fork had defeated two afternoons before. McFarland admits, "We really didn't play to our potential. We came out too flat and not ready to Tracksters take 10 first places at meet By DEAN VON MEMMOTT An American Fork Cavewoman was named best girl athlete at the Utah High School Track Invitational Invita-tional at Salt Lake City's Cottonwood Cotton-wood High Saturday. The three other members of her squad include Denise Spriggs, Michelle Schauerhamer and Tiffany Lott. American Fork's boys' and girls' teams won altogether 10 events at a three-way meet they hosted here Tuesday afternoon. The two schools they competed against were Mountain Moun-tain View and Pleasant Grove. The Mountain View Bruins won both the boys' and girls' divisions. He recalls that during the halftime break, Craig not only pointed out to the players what they had been doing wrong in the game, but also "assured us that we could play to our potential." For McFarland, the highpoint of the game was when Ritchie Duffin passed to him from the baseline and he headed the ball into the goal net. That goal put the game away for American Fork.
