Show Sports Citizen - Wednesday, April 25, 1990 - Page 10 American By DEAN VON MEMMOTT . A narrow loss to the Orem Tigers Ti-gers at home last Tuesday kept the American Cavemen stuck in the Region Four cellar. American Fork took its frustration out on the third-place third-place Provo Bulldogs Friday afternoon after-noon and took home an 11-1 win from Provo's Timp Park. On Tuesday, the Cavemen almost al-most handed Orem its first region loss. In fact, they led the Tigers 2-0 2-0 in . the first four innings. However, How-ever, some controversial calls at first base and two home runs allowed al-lowed Orem to take home a 4-3 win. Caveman pitcher Brandon Crotts held his own against the Tigers for 5 13 innings. He did so well that he didn't give up any hits until the fourth. Crotts' pitching demonstrated demon-strated how the Cavemen dominated domi-nated the first four innings. Although Crotts let two men to get on base on two outs in the first inning, he stopped Orem cold by striking out Derrick Louder. When pitcher Cade Scharrer retired the first two batters in the bottom of the inning, American Fork Viking triple By DEAN VON MEMMOTT Thanks mainly to a three-run triple, the Pleasant Grove Vikings sunk the American Fork Cavewomen 8-3 in Region Four girls' fastpitch action at the Art Dye Park Thursday afternoon. Though less experienced than Pleasant Grove, American Fork put up a strong fight for the first four innings. Thus, the game was closer than the score indicated. The Cavewomen got a good defensive de-fensive effort from second baseman base-man Kalli Walker. In the first inning, in-ning, for example, she grounded out the first two Viking hitters. Heather Johnsen tried undoing Walker's work with a baseline single hit into left field. However, third baseman Denise Williamson grounded out Hillary West. Walker opened the inning's bottom bot-tom half with an infield single, and a McCall Fagan one-bagger moved her to third on two outs. However, first baseman Val Nickell's capture cap-ture of a Laurie Hansen fly prevented pre-vented Walker from scoring. The scoreless deadlock lasted until the third when West singled in Valynn Storey. Johnsen tried coming home on that same single, but a throw from pitcher Janette Yazzie to catcher Ali Lamb chopped her down at home plate. Walked by Johnsen in the bottom bot-tom of the inning, Lori Radmall -m Fork beats seemed powerless to score. But after the Tiger hurler walked Jeff Manning, Man-ning, Quinn Goeckeritz slapped a one-run single. The score stayed 1-0 until the fourth when Caveman Rob Lamb doubled a flyball into right, scoring Goeckeritz, who had gotten on base on an error by shortstop Eric Boyer . In the fifth, Crotts posted a 1-2 count on leadoff hitter Steve Mackay, but the Tiger singled into left. A Brandon Inouye single moved the Tiger to third, and Mackay raced home as Inouye got pinched in a fielder's choice play at second. Two errors allowed Chuck Woodhouse to race home for the tying run. It marked a disappointing turning point for American Fork. That was made all too clear in later the fifth. The first Caveman hitter, Heath Snow, singled into right, but a throw from Scharrer picked him off at first. The pitcher followed up that play by striking out Crotts. Jared Hutchings doubled into right, hoping his hit could swing the momentum back into American Ameri-can Fork'sfavor. The double didn't, sinks Cavewomen in fastpitch thriller scored on Fagan's first-base sacrifice, sacri-fice, tying the score at one. With one out in the sixth, Tiger Todd Williams broke the 2-2 tie with a solo homer that resulted in Russ Cloward's replacing Crotts at the mound. Two hitters later, Eric Boyer hit a solo homer of his own, ending Orem scoring. The Cavemen nearly caught up with Orem in the seventh when a Manning baseline single into left scored Jeremy Dalton and moved Hutchings to third. Scharrer struck out Goeckeritz to preserve Oram's unbeaten league record. The Tigers' Ti-gers' luck ran out Friday when the Pleasant Grove Vikings beat them 2-1 at Orem. Pleasant Grove is the only undefeated team left in the league. On Friday, Provo's pitching staff had a terrible game at Timp Park. Altogether, four Bulldog pitchers walked 12 men and gave up nine hits. Those kinds of statistics showed why the Cavemen easily collared the Bulldogs. The game started on a rotten note for Provo as pitcher Matt String-ham String-ham walked American Fork's first Viking Shannon West scored on Yazzie's bad throw to first base. A two-out single by Sean Lassen drove the Bulldog in, but first baseman Lamb grounded out Billy Saluone to prevent Provo from catching up. The Bulldogs' situation worsened as Stringham let American Fork load the bases on walks in the sec- ond. That permitted a Manning walk to score Cloward and cost Stringham his pitching job. The Vikings held the Cavewomen in check, though. When Pleasant Grove loaded the bases on no outs in the fifth, the game went downhill for American Fork. Angie Blackhursf s one-run single opened the Vikings' six-run rally. On one out, Amber Meesom tripled in three runs with a right-field right-field fly, then came home on a passed ball. Although the Cavewomen retaliated retali-ated with double play, they never fully recovered from Meesom's key hit. They tried to take advantage of Williamson's two-out, right-field triple in the bottom of the inning, but Johnsen struck out Fagan. Hansen and Lamb each made a run for American Fork during the r sixth, but Pleasant Grove didnt let the Cavewomen come closer than 8-3. ' OUIO RtniciHi Laney's 86 W. The Bulldogs prevented Goeck-eritz's Goeck-eritz's fourth-inning, one-run single from triggering a rally. Still, scoring scor-ing more runs remained elusive for them. For instance, after Terrence Saluone's center-field double moved his brother Billy to third on one but, Williams caught a Dave Turner flyball and Lewis struck out Todd Santiago to prevent any Bulldog scoring that inning. In the fifth, Bird socked a right-field right-field triple. The Bulldog then tried stealing home on one out, but a throw from catcher Manning to Lewis bagged Bird at home plate.
