NEWS AND IDEAS Sharon MelissaMayntz NORTH COUNTY STAFF Writing is an important skill for all students, and Sharon Elementary students got to showcase their writing skills on April 8 with their eighth annual an-nual Authors' Fair. Each of the school's approximately ap-proximately 450 students wrote a book for the fair and had the opportunity to share those books with their parents and guests during the evening event. Parents visited different classrooms where their childrens' chil-drens' books were displayed, and they had the opportunity to read the books and enjoy refreshments. "We make it a really special evening for the children," Vanette Skabelund, one of the ro Canyon View Junior High School has released the names of students who have made the honor roll for the third term of the 2007-2008 school year. "(Parents) really enjoy seeing what their children are able to create." Skabelund helped coordinate coordi-nate the fair but said the real work is done by every teacher as they assist their students in creating books to share. "Every teacher has the role to make sure their students publish a book for the fair," she said. "We have a small school but our teachers are very dedicated." The types of books vary for each classroom, and many teachers use the Authors' Fair as an opportunity for students to showcase other skills or topics they have been studying throughout the year. Skabe-lund's Skabe-lund's class, for example, has been learning how to research Nathanael Hunter, Amy Jamison, Amy Johason, Melissa Killpack, Mikayla Kirkby, Taylor Liddell, Katelyn Louder, Jim Lu, Tatiana Moasen, Michaela Nielsen, Mariah Nimmer, Anthony Pesqueira, Elizabeth Eliza-beth Peterson, Parker I'hair, Samuel Sam-uel Primrose, Jorgen Rasmussen, Cameron Robins, Kristee Rowley, Jacob Simpson, Josephine Slade, Ellie Smith, Kayce Spencer, Bryn Stephens. Other books at the fair included in-cluded how-to books written by the kindergarten students and poetry books by second graders, as well as many other stories and personal writings from all grade levels. According to Skabelund, showing different types of writing at the fair helps students stu-dents realize how valuable writing is for all subject areas. "Writing is a lifelong skill," she said. "Creative writing isn't the only type of writing they will need to do." In addition to writing their books for the fair, students learn how to edit their work and how to present it effective McOmber, Benjamin Mitchell, Tori Nielson, Trevor O'Brien, Olimpia Okamura, Max Olivier, Lindsey Peterson, Caleb Porter, 1 Natalie Reed, Michael Reyneke, Kimberly Rhodes, Daniel Rivera, Nathaniel Robinson, Mark Schrae-del, Schrae-del, Beth Shurtleff, Adam Shurtz, Hyrum Stauffer, Julieanna Stein-mann, Stein-mann, Seth Warnick, Ashley Warren, Tanyail Wilson, Andrew Winegar, Alexis Zollinger. , Eighth-grade high honor roll: Justin Ascione, Katherin Balser. Sharon Elementary has a large number of students who come from non-English speaking speak-ing backgrounds, but Skabelund Skabe-lund said the students make great strides in their English literacy skills while preparing for the fair. Some students may write their books in Spanish Span-ish and then translate them, and teachers are always willing will-ing to help students write correctly cor-rectly in English. At the same time, the fair gives students with a flair for writing the opportunity to expand their skills beyond traditional classroom writing assignments. "We have extremely gifted writers among our students," Skabelund said. "This gives them the opportunity to reach beyond themselves." Because students are eager to share their writing and individual in-dividual teachers work hard to prepare for the fair, Skabelund Skabe-lund said the event is easy to organize. The school's administration admin-istration and PTA are very supportive, which ensures that the event will remain popular and enjoyable for parents and students for as long as there are new stories to be written.
