The 47.000-square-foot theater, to be located at KXK) S. 750 Kast in Orem near Mervyns department store, is part of a planned multimillion-dollar multimillion-dollar expansion of University Univer-sity Mall scheduled to break ground this fall. The project, which has been quietly in the works for more than three years, is expected to open next fall. Called the University Mall Village, the 20-acre outdoor retail center will include more than 71,000 square feet of new retail and restaurant space and will be anchored by Cinemark and three major restaurants. Headquartered in Piano, Texas, Cinemark has signed commitments, as rVtilT.rvkfwri iiinrrmm.;-C-. ftps of the chair KlunAuhV JLUj JiULbijjJjJ THE ELEVATOR COMPANY. 24-Hour Emergency Service Fair and Consistent Pricing with No Hidden Costs 808-8SPAIW CL.JIt-.JS. - YOUR TRUCK of June 30, to open nine new theaters with 121 screens by the end of the year, according accord-ing to the company's Web site. The Orem Planning Commission Com-mission will meet this afternoon after-noon to review the mall's request for site plan approval of its planned expansion, and to rezone half of the 20-acre parcel to commercial from residential. The other 10-acre parcel is already zoned commercial, com-mercial, said Rob Kallas, the mall's general manager. "We had to tear down a couple of houses on the property and get the zoning zon-ing changed to commercial. After the Planning Commission Commis-sion gives the go-ahead, our request will go to Orem City Council for approval. Once the city has given its approval, and the leasing with Cinemark Cin-emark is signed and financing is arranged, then construction can start," he said. The new project will add 118,000 square feet of additional ad-ditional retail space to the 1.54-million-square-foot mall. The mall has around 2,000 employees. employ-ees. "There's a demand and need for additional tenants that are different from what we already have. By bringing bring-ing those tenants to the mall, that keeps it a focal shopping point," Kallas said. Designed by Callison Architecture of Seattle, the retail center will have water features and will be home to between 20 and 30 retailers. Kallas said the mall has seen consistent growth in the pqst few years, achieving a 12 percent increase in annual sales this past eight months compared with an 8 percent growth in sales in the same period in 20()(i. The Orem mall has 200 stores including 120 national tenants such as Banana Republic, Eddie Bauer and Victoria's Secret. The mall, which opens between 10 and 12 new stores annually, now has a retail vacancy rate of less than 5 percent.
