Six quality baseball teams and only four playoff spots will always equal two disappointed disap-pointed teams when May rolls around. The equation is anything but a fair one, and it's one that Mountain View found itself on the wrong side of for the second sec-ond year in a row. Despite a successful season in which it went 14-8, including includ-ing an outstanding 11-1 against non-region opponents, the Bruins couldn't quite make a run into the 5A state playoffs. Winning over 65 percent of your games would be viewed as a great thing by most coaches, but Mountain View coach Chris Cooper doesn't see it in that light. "We didn't make the playoffs, play-offs, so I guess we didn't do very well," Cooper said. "Our number one goal was to make the playoffs. It's hard for me to justify not accomplishing that in any way." Although it may be hard to justify, it's definitely not hard to explain why the Bruins stayed home. "We threw two games away," Cooper said, referring to losses to American Fork and Spanish Fork. In the Spanish Fork game, Mountain View fought back to take a late lead, only to relinquish relin-quish it in the final inning. Against American Fork, errors and walks allowed the Cavemen to take the lead, and a diving catch preserved their win. Despite the heartbreaking losses, the Bruins showed character and battled themselves them-selves into position to compete for a playoff spot by winning their final three region games. "I'm proud of our guys for fighting back," Cooper said. "We dug ourselves a hole and the AF and SF games came back to haunt us. I think we were good enough at the end. I don't think anyone would've wanted to see our name in the tournament draw." To illustrate just how close Mountain View was to breaking break-ing through, consider that they could have been crowned outright region champs were it not for three innings this season. Those innings include the big innings surrendered to Mountain View Baseball Overall Record: 14 8 Region Record: 4-6, fifth place Top pitcher: Cam Schmidt Top hitter: Mark Garrett Gold glove: Trent Call A.F. and S.F. that were fueled by walks, as well as a five-run first inning allowed against Lone Peak. How close Mountain View came to a region championship champion-ship and the fact that they didn't lose to a team from Utah that was not in Region 4 led coach Cooper to proclaim. "We were a top 10 team in the state." Much of Mountain View's success can be attributed to a trio of players. Mark Garrett Gar-rett led the team offensively, batting a sizzling .493, and an even more impressive .500 in region play. "Garrett was big all year. He had to have one of the most consistent years I've seen as a coach," Cooper said. "At some point a lot of kids will slump, but 1 don't think lie ever went two games without a hit ." Trent Call anchored the defense from his shortstop position, po-sition, making count less sparkling spar-kling plays throughout the season. The ace of the pitching staff was Cam Schmidt who quietly notched a 7-2 record with a sub-.'i.OO I IRA. In spite of the disappointing disappoint-ing result this season. Coach Cooper still has plenty to smile about as his squad will return (i starters, including the top two hitters (Garrett and Marcus Mar-cus Draper), as well us the top two pitchers from lliis season (Schmidt and Sam Roden).
