In January, she was the first place winner for nationals na-tionals for MTNA in Canada in the 15-year-old to 18-year-old group. When she was 12 she won second place in nationals in the 10-year-old to 14-year-old group. The purpose of the MTNA performance competitions are "to provide educational experiences experi-ences for students and teachers teach-ers and to recognize exceptionally exception-ally talented young artists and their teachers in their pursuit of musical excellence," according accord-ing to MTNA. They start with a state competition, com-petition, move on to a regional competition, and finish with a national competition. There are three winners for nationals in both age groups, all of who get monetary prizes. McGarr saved her prize money and bought herself her first car, a 2000 Volkswagen Beetle. McGarr had an opportunity in April to play her flute for Senator Orrin Hatch in Washington Wash-ington D.C. "From the Top" picked musicians they had heard before, and asked them to play for their senators. Family Le?acv DeiM Hti d O j, A Group Of The Finest Doctors & Professionals In Dentistry . "I've played the piece I played for him since I was 12." McGarr played with other musicians from "From the Top" for other congressmen the night before she played by herself for Senator Hatch. "It was just me playing, so it was kind of awkward," she said. "But he was so nice, like a grandpa." With many talents, such as dancing, and playing football, basketball, and soccer for fun, McGarr wanted to be a doctor instead of a full time musician. She gave up that dream when she got "quizzy" dissecting animals in high school. Her mom said Helen would be a good teacher, but Helen said if she were to major in music in college, she would want to play for movies. No matter what McGarr chooses to do, her mom said she hope she continues to play because she has a rare gift. "I think she is amazing," said Wendy McGarr. "Even when she was 6, her teacher said she was special because she just had this musical thing. She knew how to make that sound, the sound you can't teach She knew what to do instinctively."
