Show Thursday, June 21, 2007 OREM TIM (S Page 5 Obituaries Merlin LeGrande Smith Jim Gray LaVell Meldrum Bigelow James Andrew Gray, 72, passed away of cancer peacefully at his home, June 17, 2007. He was born Oct. 5, 1934 toAlden and Anna Jensen Gray. He graduated from American Ameri-can Fork High School and served a 3 year mission in Hong Kong. He graduated gradu-ated from BYU with his B.S. and Masters degrees in Education. Jim taught Seminary for 5 years and then served as a School Counselor at Lehi Jr. High for 9 years. He then went on to become Principal of Lehi Jr. High, Geneva Elementary, Aspen Elementary, Lehi Elementary, and Cedar Valley Val-ley Elementary schools for a total of 33 years as an Educator. After retiring from the school district, he drove UTA buses for over 13 years. Upon his medical retirement, retire-ment, he received the "One Million Mil-lion Miles Accident Free Award." Being only 1,000 miles short of one million miles, his co-workers organized a walk-a-thon to make up the needed miles for this award. Jim and his family greatly appreciated these great friends for this meaningful tribute. His family would like to express their gratitude for Melissa C. Corcoran, Corco-ran, M.D., PhD, the staff at the Utah Cancer Specialists of Provo and First Choice Home Care and Hospice for their kindness and for seeing to his needs. Jim served in many callings in the LDS Church. He most enjoyed serving as Bishop of the Singles Ward and also teaching gospel doctrine Sunday School classes. He married Patricia (Pat) Larson, Lar-son, April 19, 1962 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children. Jim enjoyed being with his family and watching them succeed and having get-togethers. Jim is survived by his devoted wife Pat who cared for him constantly; con-stantly; sons and daughters, Julie (Clay) Johnson, Sandra (Chris) Johnson, Neil (Stephanie) Gray, and Mark (Jill) Gray, all of Lehi; 12 grandchildren, 2 sisters, Mary Ann Judd (Leo) Johnson, Lehi; Sally (Phil) Anderson, Salem; and brother, Glen (Jeanette) Gray, Colorado. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 12:00 noon in the Lehi East Stake Center, Cen-ter, 900 N. 1200 E. Friends and family may call at the church Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment, Lehi City Cemetery. He was born on November 12, 1917, in Provo, K UTtoPercival and Margaret Marga-ret Bigelow. He graduated gradu-ated from BYU and subsequently earned his Masters and Doctorate Degrees. He served as a i Naval Aviator until 1965, when he entered the world of business and education. He earned three Navy Crosses, the Navy's highest award, as a dive-bomber pilot in the Pacific in WWII. LaVell married Avalon Chris-tensen Chris-tensen in Norfolk, VA two days prior to Pearl Harbor. Their marriage mar-riage was later solemnized in the Manti Temple. They were blessed with seven sons. His children revere re-vere him for his hard work, integrity, integ-rity, respect for others and their property, his desire for learning, love of God, and activity in the LDS Church. LaVell is preceded in death by his wife, Avalon, and his twin sons Joseph Alfonzo and Andrew Curtis. He is survived by his sisters, sis-ters, Aft on Miller, PI. Grove, and RuthWilsted, Northridge, CA.; his brother broth-er Dr. Richard P. (Suzanne), SLC; five sons, Christopher Christo-pher M. (Mitz-ie) (Mitz-ie) Bountiful, Robert D. (Jill) PI. Grove, Michael L. (Beth) American Fork, William S. (Vickie) Riverton and Mark E. (Jenny) Provo; and 33 grandchildren and 40 greatgrandchildren. great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the North Field Stake Center Chapel, 105 West 1800 North, PI. Grove. He married Glen-na Glen-na Christine Loudermilk of Whitley City, Kentucky December 2, 1966. They were sealed in the Provo Temple August Au-gust 17, 1776. Merlin was born September 3, 1924 in American Ameri-can Fork, Utah. He has preceded in death by his parents, Florence Grace Jeppson Smith and Oliver Clyde Smith. He is survived by his loving wife, Glenna, six children, Kaye E. Ottley (Harold) of Rupert, Idaho; Paul M. Smith (Trudy) of Milford, Utah; Claudette Bray, (Steven), Dennis Scott Smith (Linda) of Burley, Idaho; Craig LeGrande Smith (Sheila) of Milton, Mil-ton, Wash.; and Lisa Marie Van-DerMeer, Van-DerMeer, (Craig) of Declo, Idaho. Two stepdaughters Sherrie Jackson Jack-son (Jim) of Laytnn, Utah; Carla MaLoney (Bob) of Dayton, Ohio; 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren; two brothers Kale Smith (Myrna) and Keith Smith (Sherma) of American Fork and one sister Grace Bradford (Garth) of Blanding, Utah. Twelve nieces and nephews. Merlin was a member of the Operating Engineers Ixxral 3 for 50 years. He was an avid outdoor-sman, outdoor-sman, loved working with horses, raising rabbits, gardening, and landscaping. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Services were held at the Mc-Creary Mc-Creary County Funeral Home in Whitley City, Kentucky, June 15, 2007.
