Judging by what happened at the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame induction ceremony on June 2nd in I Am Angeles w here she and her students earned nine awards, she's doing do-ing a great job of helping others oth-ers reach significant levels of success. Martial Arts Hall of Fame. Only 78 people were inducted named International School of the Year. In addition to the school of the year honor, seven sev-en of Beardall's students were inducted into the hall for a variety va-riety of reasons. The recent inductees in-ductees were: Jasmine Bishop, Tara Bishop, Laurie Everett, Amy Everett, Austin LaFon-taine, LaFon-taine, Shayley Peterson, Mario Garcia, and Alison Craig. Despite being a great competitor com-petitor in the sport, Beardall claims that she gets even more satisfaction when her students succeed. "What I like is to be able to teach. I love to compete, but I also love to teach people to make a difference with them," Beardall said. "I can see somebody some-body going from getting F's to straight A's, just in a matter of a few months by being able to focus and concentrate. It's not just that, but the self-confidence that everyone receives makes a big difference that to me means more than competing. compet-ing. I just feel like it's a privilege privi-lege to teach people." While Beardall maintains that the recognition her students stu-dents received stems from their having quality instruction, instruc-tion, she is quick to share the credit with the school's other instructors, which include Garcia Gar-cia and Craig. "I don't take the award lightly and I don't take it like I earned the whole thing because be-cause I know it takes a lot of good people that have been trained and do their part to make a school successful," Beardall said. "Having everybody every-body work together as a team has made it successful." Many of the awards were granted based on the recipients' recipi-ents' individual success in the sport, however others received awards for other things. Peterson, who is Beardall's niece, received her award for being an exceptional student. Peterson got straight "As" during the school year to receive re-ceive the Academic Award. Ogden pitchers keep Orem from rallying past Raptors in season opener Neil K. Warner NORTH COUNTY Ogden Raptors manager Jeff Carter has 14 pitchers on his roster to choose from. Tuesday night in the season opener against Orem, he used four of them and his timing couldn't have been better. When Orem threatened in the seventh and eighth innings, Carter picked the right man out of the bullpen and when the Owlz rallied in the ninth he stayed with the right guy as Ogden spoiled Orem's home opener with a 4-3 win in front of 3,417 fans at the home of the Owlz. "The pitching staff gives up four runs, you should win a lot of games in this league," said Orem manager Tom Kotchman. "We had opportunities in the seventh, eighth and ninth, but overall it wasn't a bad first outing." Orem trailed 4-0 in the bottom bot-tom of the sixth when the Owlz mounted a rally. With one out Gordie Gronkowski, who had three of Orem's 10 hits on the night, doubled to right -center and after a wild pitch allowed Gronkowski to move up a base, Chris Garcia followed with a walk. Trevor Pippen hit what looked like a double-play ball to Ogden second baseman OGDEN OREM Elian Herrera, who fielded the ball, but dropped it. He picked it up and still got the runner out at second, but Pippen was safe at first and the run scored to cut the lead to 4-1. The Owlz rallied again in the seventh when Jerry Gonzalez hit a one-out double. DeAndre Miller and Jeremy Moore each walked to load the bases, prompting Carter to make a pitching change and call on Wilfredo Diaz. Jay Brossman flew out to shallow right, not deep enough to score the runner from third, but Gronkowski Gronkows-ki picked up Brossman Bross-man with an infield single to score a run and cut the lead to 4-2. But Carter turned to his bullpen. Paul Koss was brought in to put out the fire. He promptly fanned Garcia to end the inning. Orem came back for more in the eighth inning when Pippen led off with a single and after Anel De Los Santos struck out, Hector Estrella walked. Carter called on the bullpen and again it paid off. Paul Koss got Gonzalez Gon-zalez to fly out and struck out Miller looking to end the inning.
