Utah Valley State finished the season with a 3-1 record in the Division I Independent baseball tournament, but lost the tie breaker of run differential versus ver-sus common opponents. Still, the team's 25-30 record was the best in four seasons at the Division I leveL "Nobody figured that we would be as good as we were," said UVSC coach Steve Gardner. "I thought we played pretty well in the (Independent) tournament and overall, I thought the tournament tourna-ment was a big success. We ran into a stretch (during the season) where we didn't pitch well and we started off the season not swinging the bats really well, but when we got it working together, we were a pretty good team." After losing senior Dan Bulow to academic problems for the season, UVSC senior catcher Derrick Thomas helped take up the slack by tying the school record for home runs in a season with 15. He also had a school-record 66 RBI. Thomas was one of three UVSC players named to the Division I All-Independent first team. The other two were senior shortstop Eli Slesk and junior pitcher Marcus Moore. Freshmen Fresh-men Jace Brinkerhoff and Austin Heaps earned honorable mention honors. Here's a look back on how the other sports programs fared in the 200607 season. Men's basketball It was a record year for wins for a young program and the majority of the players making the most noise were underclassman. underclass-man. UVSC finished the year with a 22-7 record. The Wolverines were led by sophomore guard Ryan Toolson, who was named to the United Basketball League First Team UVSC will have a big hole to fill with the spot vacated by the senior do-it-all David Heck, who earned second team honors. But Jordan Brady, a junior, who was named to the All-Newcomer team, should help the Wolverines fill the void. Toolson averaged 18.7 points a game while shooting 57 percent from the field and 52 percent from the 3-point line. Heck averaged 12.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in UBL play while playing a team-high 29.6 minutes. Brady led the Wolverines in rebounding with a 5.2 average for the season. In UBL play, he averaged six points and 5.2 rebounds a game. In a road win over South Dakota State, Brady led UVSC with 17 points and 13 rebounds. He also had 12 rebounds in a home win over North Dakota State. Women's basketball Robyn Fairbanks, a sophomore sopho-more center, had a career year and the women's program set a record number of wins. Fairbanks was named the Division I Independent Player of the Year and was a six-time D-I Independent Player of the Week. She finished the season with an average of 23.7 points (third nationally) and 9. 1 rebounds while hitting 56 percent from the field. Earlier in the year, Fairbanks Fair-banks became the first player in Utah Valley's NCAA history to reach 1,000 career points, a feat she accomplished in just 49 career games. Sandy Marvin and Julie McMurray were named to the All-Independent second team. Marvin was second on the team in scoring with an average of 13.3 points and averaged 3.2 rebounds, re-bounds, 2.9 assists and 1.4 steals per game. McMurray averaged 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game during her freshman campaign. Over the final eight games of the season (all vs. UBL opponents) she averaged 15.3 points per game while shooting 58.6 percent from the field and 50 percent from the three-point line. Utah Valley finished 15-13 on the year and 55 in UBL action with 12 out of 13 players on this season's roster returning next year. Cross County The Utah Valley State men's and women's cross country team teams finished fifth and fourth, respectively, at the nine-team Independent Championships held at IPFW. In the women's 6K race the top four teams were separated by only 11 points. South Dakota State was first with 55 points while IPFW was second with 58 points. UC Davis had 64 points while the Wolverines had 66. Freshman Mary Nothum was the top Wolverine finisher at fifth place by running a 22:34.2. Senior Bekah Poppinga was seventh 22:39.4. Both runners earned All-Independent All-Independent honors for finishing in the top 10. Karinne Bentley, Kirsten Barney and Ashley Evans Ev-ans all finished in the top 20. Chase Englestead was the top male runner, finishing 11th in the 8K race running a 26:27. 1. Danny Moody was the next Wolverine runner to cross the finish line, finishing 21st. Track and Field Both the men's and women's teams finished fourth at the Division Divi-sion I Independent Championships. Champion-ships. The UVSC men finished with fourth with 75 team points, while the women finished fourth with 93.5 team points. North Dakota Da-kota State won the team championships cham-pionships on both the men's and the women's side. "Going in to the meet we expected ex-pected to finish where we did," . said track coach Scott Houle. "We didn't do as well as I think we should have in some areas and we did better than I expected in others. As a whole, I think it was a good meet for us." Senior Kari Snow-Tupou broke her own meet record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.31, bettering her time of 14.48 in the 2005 Independent Inde-pendent Championships. Tupou also placed fourth in the 100m with a personal-record time of 12. 13. She was also a part of the UVSC women's 4x100m relay team that finished second at the meet. On the men's side, it was freshman fresh-man Zach Cook who had the big day. Cook won the long jump with a meet -record leap of 24 feet, 1.75 inches. He also shone in the hurdles events, taking second in the 400m hurdles (54. 12) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (15.42). Cook was also part of the UVSC 4x400m relay team that placed third. Softball The Wolverines finished the season with a 23-29 mark, their best in school history. "Overall, I'm happy with the progress and the direction we're moving in," said Softball coach Todd Fairbourne. "I hope and expect ex-pect we're going to take the next step next year and go out and find a few more kids." UVSC struck out less thin its opponents. Home runs wer e nearly tripled. Sophomore Heidi Boyer had a breakout season. She led the team in hitting at .389. She was has been named to the ESPN the Magazine District 8 All-Academic first team. Boyer is the first Utah Valley athlete to be named to the All-District first team. To be nominated, the student-athlete student-athlete must be a starter or an important reserve with at least a 3.2 GPA for her career. UVSC had four other players hit .300 or better. Corie Jeasen batted .312, followed Cari Hamilton Ham-ilton (.308) and Jasmine Joyce (.301) and Jamie Tonis (.300). Men's golf Utah Valley senior golfer Nic van Vuuren capped off a stellar career at UVSC by being named to the Division I All-Independent team for the third time in his career. ca-reer. In 1 1 tournaments, van Vuuren had a stroke average of 72.5 for the Wolverines, who finished fin-ished second at the independent championship at the end of April. Van Vuuren finished in third place after sh it ing 1 -under (71) for a final score of 4-under. Cole finished the tournament 10-over, tied for 2i)th, while Robinson was 8-over and tied for 24th.
