Last year, Timpview missed its tree throws down the stretch on its way togiving up a late lead and losing to ( )rem in I he semifinals. The two years before that, the T'Birds made it all the way to the championship game only to return re-turn home without a trophy. This year, the anguish of years past was replaced with the jubilation that comes with the title of state champions. "Now they're not crying," said Timpview Coach Kawika Akina "It's all tears of joy now." The fact that the state championship came against the arch-nemesis Tigers made the win even sweeter for the I "Birds. After five consecutive losses to the defending state champions, Timpview finally got over the hump. "We've iK-en struggling against them It was like a David vs. (ioliath thing for us, and a mental block that we couldn't get past them." Akina said "We finally did it and it shows that the girls have a lot of heart." Russ Lyman NORTH COUNTY On the night of Feb. 20, at the T'Wolves' boys basketball basket-ball game, Cali Nelson could be seen walking around with her arm in a sling and she was one of the healthy ones for Timpanogos going into its 5A girls basketball quarterfinal quarterfi-nal game against Skyline on Feb. 21. Several T"Wolf injuries amounted to the equivalent of bringing a knife to a gun fight, and the Eagles took full advantage on their way to a 58-38 win. In addition to Nelson's shoulder injury, point guard Jennifer Neilsen was hobbled by a sprained ankle and Amy Weitzeil was forced to miss the game due to a broken hand suffered in Tuesday's win over Kearns. "We went in undermanned, so that kind of threw us for a loop gameplanning," said Timpanogos coach Liz Darger. "It's just hard to match their size. They were too much for us tonight, but at full strength we have a great team." With Timpanogos missing miss-ing one of its key low post defenders in Weitzeil, Skyline center Dani Peterson had her way down low. Peterson's 17 points and eight rebounds led the Eagles. At one point, Peterson scored 11 straight points for Skyline during a decisive run that spanned part of the second and third quarter. "Dani is a great player," said Skyline coach Deb Bennett. Ben-nett. "She's played the entire season with three people connected con-nected to her hip bone and she averages a double-double." Peterson's defense also contributed to her team's win, as she had four blocks down low. While Timpanogos struggled to get shots off inside, in-side, it didn't fare any better from outside. Skyline's team defense held the T'Wolves to only 23 percent shooting from the field and 17 percent from the 3-point line.
