Northridge Elementary Jazz reading contest Northridge recently completed com-pleted its Jazz reading contest. con-test. The school's goal was to complete one million minutes of reading in a one-month time frame. The final tally of minutes read came close 865,321 minutes. The minutes were submitted submit-ted to the Utah Jazz and Scholastics, and Northridge hopes to be one of the 12 top schools in Utah. In that case, they would have the reward of having a Jazz player come to the school for an assembly. Principal Kimberly Bird said the reading total was achieved by having teachers and parents read to students before and after school. Students Stu-dents read on their own at home. There were Family Night reading challenges, read-a-thons at the school, and a pep rally. The school's 100-day celebration was combined with the reading contest to include 100 minutes of reading that day. On two mornings, students who came early to school to read or be read to were provided with cereal. "Our school also had several sev-eral competitions for PE equipment and lunch with the principal to help with motivation," motiva-tion," said Bird. Jimmy Balderson, a BYU basketball player, came to the school to read to the students while they ate breakfast. "What we gleaned from this event was bigger than winning a Jazz player," Bird said. "We learned how important impor-tant reading is. Our students enjoyed the experience of setting a goal and working to accomplish it. Our theme this year is to 'Dream Big and Make It Happen'. I feel like this was an authentic way for us to provide an opportunity for the students to make it happen." Orchard Elementary I Grant received Orchard's Or-chard's Spanish Immersion program recently received a grant for $1,000 to match the funds they earned at the fall fiesta. Spanish books will be purchased for a take-home reading library for second and third grades. "We appreciate the parents who assisted our Spanish Immersion teachers in completing com-pleting the grant," said Paula Gordon, TSA. w Carbide Blade 14' -70 Tooth Blade Included iu tn rx than abrasive 14' -70 Tooth Carbide Blade $129.95 9Z - 3332 Epif 31007 or before |
