Show Thursday, March 1, 2007 OREM TIMES Page 5 I notes NEWS AND IDEAS Lakeridge Michael Rigert NORTH COUNTY STAFF At some junior high schools, kids in physical education class look forward to something a bit out of the ordinary such as a section on floor hockey or gymnastics or perhaps even a impromptu game of dodgeball. But at Lakeridge Junior High School, ninth-grade students seek to score well on RE. fitness exams so that they can bike the Provo River Trail to Bridal Veil Falls, learn the finer points of cross-country skiiing, or take in a day of snowshoeing at 2002 Winter Olympic venue Soldier Hollow near Heber City. For the past few years, the school has enjoyed a partnership partner-ship with Brigham Young University's Uni-versity's College of Health and Human Performance in which BYU P.E. education students accompany Lakeridge ninth-graders ninth-graders on seasonal outdoor adventures. The BYU students mentor the ninth graders on how to use specific gear for each event, get them excited about non-traditional physical education activities and provide pro-vide the kids with positive role models. On Feb. 16, the university students accompanied 50 Lakeridge Lak-eridge ninth-graders and their P.E. instructors for a day of snowshoeing at Soldier Hollow. Hol-low. Main, American Fork, Utah Exit 281 801-492-1110 FROM CLASSROOMS AND EDUCATORS takes fitness to new heights with two BYU students who showed them how to put on and use the snowshoes. "We had some kids that had no idea what a snow-shoe snow-shoe looked like," said Lanell Brown, a physical education teacher at Lakeridge. Though the Lakeridge-BYU program teaches students the importance of life-long physical physi-cal activity, it also introduces them to a wealth of exciting recreational activities they might never otherwise had a chance to experience, she said. In essence a reward for good behavior and demonstrating demonstrat-ing minimum fitness standards, stan-dards, the trips are available to 50 Lakeridge students each fall, winter and spring. Though the fitness requirements for the trips may exclude some students from the trips who score lower on P.E. testing, Brown said the high-energy activities ac-tivities are demanding on even the most fit students. "If we bike 20 miles ... we want to make sure we have kids that can make it," she said. And the program extends far beyond providing a sampling sam-pling of extreme sports experiences experi-ences for kids. Adopted as a so-called "model school" by BYLTs P.E. department, Lakeridge Lak-eridge P.E. staff are exposed to the latest school fitness models, mod-els, research and techniques available from their university counterparts. One innovation is a new standardized cardiovascular test used by colleges and public schools in which P.E. students runs back and forth between two cones with the pace, and audible beep, increasing each minute. Glenna Padfield, a teacher education and physical education educa-tion instructor at BYU, said grant monies are also available avail-able for the program that help pay for Lakeridge students' equipment rentals and user fees on the trips. The partnership partner-ship between her future P.E. teachers at BYU, the P.E. staff at Lakeridge, and the ninth graders themselves in mutually beneficial, she said. Last weekend the choirs put on their 2007 Broadway show. I went Saturday night and it was really well done. It was kind of weird though, because it was a bunch of Broadway songs strewn together. to-gether. I would call it "Broadway "Broad-way Soup." I've been noticing something some-thing more and more, and as I analyze it, I'm finding it to be more and more interesting. The question I ask myself is: "Why do people aspire to mediocrity?" me-diocrity?" I'm not trying to raise myself my-self up higher than anyone, but so many times I see things happening and it's just the very minimum, sometimes not even that. Stuff like, "I'll settle for a C rather than an A," or, "At least I'm trying" are things I hear a lot. Disrespect to people who deserve respect is another "cool" thing to do. I just don't get it. I can see that some people are just lazy and don't want to do anything, but that doesn't constitute mediocrity. Personally, I try to do the best I can whenever I do something, and I don't get any satisfaction out of doing the minimum. I can't force anyone into doing their best to achieve the highest, but imagine what this world would be like if everyone every-one did just a little bit more. STAND 1 instate Copy |
