On the line is Brigham Nielsen, as is Sam Ashman, Randy McBride and Jessie Fowlke. Sophomore JoJo Eili and Spencer Schwenke are the defensive ends, while David Maunga will play at defensive defen-sive tackle. Both Eili and Maunga will also see time at the fullback position. Riley Hunsaker and Stafford Staf-ford Strong will play at the defensive back positions, and both will move to the other side of the ball to play wide receiver. The start of the season is already al-ready upon the Timberwolves with their opener at Lehi Aug. 18. While Molen admits he wishes they had more time to prepare, he said his team is ready. "They've been doing great, they've been working hard," Molen said. "We're ready to be successful." SCOREBOARD Owlz schedule Owlz 2005 results Ma Opponent Time June20 0rem7,Oglen5 June 21 Ogden 14. The only lineman that has some varsity experience is Cameron Leeper, who will . start at left tackle and defensive defen-sive end. "He (Leeper) leads really well by example," senior running run-ning back Tom Steele said. "He always pancake blocks his guy; he always finishes his block, and he works hard." The only two starting returners re-turners from last year's team are Steele and quarterback John Killpack. On defense, Steele moves into a linebacker lineback-er position, while Killpack will be in the Tigers' secondary. second-ary. "He is very poised," Gilchrist said of Killpack. "He keeps his cool and he's really taken control and done a good job of running the offense." Gilchrist is equally complimentary compli-mentary of Steele. "He is a very good kid, Chukars pull three games Jason Franchuk NORTH COUNTY It might sound cruel, but the Chukars can be called the chokers at least when Idaho Falls visits Orem. Which is something the Owlz would love to have happen hap-pen every day, the way they always seem to rally against Idaho Falls, which blew another an-other late lead to lose 8-6 to the Owlz on Monday. UVSC's stadium must be haunted, eh? Orem (35-19) won the last three games against the Chukars (28-26) by rallying each time after the seventh inning, including a ninth-inning comeback Sunday Sun-day afternoon. The good fortune keeps carrying over, but didn't take quite as long Monday. Trailing Trail-ing 6-0 going into its half of the sixth inning, the Owlz slowly chipped away to give manager Tom Kotchman a pleasant, if not exactly surprising, sur-prising, victory on his 52nd birthday. Although he knows his team is beating some serious seri-ous odds. "This past week has been the damndest thing I've seen in a long time," Kotchman said. "I wish this was happening happen-ing the last week of the season, sea-son, but you can't control this kind of stuff." Oh, yes you can. At least against the Chukars. Tadd Brewer made another rally win official in the eighth, when he laced a bases-loaded single up the middle for two runs and an 8-6 lead. "He is the focal point of both our offense of-fense and defense." The shortage of varsity experience and returning starters start-ers doesn't mean that there is a shortage of expectation and excitement going into the season. "If we execute and use our speed, we can contend for the region title," Gilchrist said. Steele agrees with that analysis. "We need to emphasize our speed, and speed kills," he said. Steele said that as a captain, he often reminds his teammates team-mates of how the Tigers ended their season last year: a 41-14 choke job as Owlz take final in series from Idaho Falls and a single, with a strikeout in the middle of the sequence. What unglued him, and the rest of the Chukars, was a one-out error that could've been an inning-ending play. Third baseman Marc Mad-dox Mad-dox failed to snare a choppy ground ball right near his base. What could've been an easy tag for the second out and possibly a third with a throw to first base ended up being an error that loaded the bases for the Owlz. Abel Nieves, celebrating his 21st birthday, made it on base. Luis Rivera drilled a double to center field that scored two runs to tie the score at 6-6. After an intentional walk, Gutierrez gave up the single to Brewer, a .268 hitter who went 2-for-4 on the night. The ending was nothing like the start, in which Orem looked lost during. Idaho Falls, which entered the game 1-8 at UVSC this year and losers of the last six there, had a hot start in the first. The Chukars led 3-0 after three batters, capped by Chris McConnell's second home run of the year, a two-run shot. A run followed in the fourth and Idaho Falls added two more in the sixth for a 6-0 lead. Orem didn't get on base until un-til the fourth, failing with the first nine batters before Ryan Mount led off with a single. That went to waste, as he never advanced. Same thing with the fifth, when Nieves started with a single but didn't move 90 feet. The first sign of life in Orem came in the sixth, and that must've been enough to M METAL ROOFING ? "It was a huge shock," Steele said. "We didnt perform; we weren't ready. The saying 'no regrets' has kind of become our motto in the huddle. We don't want that to happen again." Other key players in what Gilchrist calls a "deep" back-field back-field are Jake Balser who will also see time at wide receiver re-ceiver and Tucker Lamb. Gilchrist admits the season will be a learning process, similar to last year, when the offensive scheme was switched from an I Veer to a misdirection misdirec-tion slide. A change like that took some adjustment. But Gilchrist said the team got better as the year wore on, and he predicts that will be the case again this season. "They're still learning, and it's about expecting to be successful suc-cessful and working toward that," he said. After two singles, Idaho Falls recorded outs on the next two batters. But Peter Bourjos came through with a hard two-run single that bounced off the first baseman's glove and into right field. Chris Pettit continued the momentum swing with a two-run homer, his fifth, that pulled Orem to within 64 with three innings to go. I Sunday's game: Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, having managed only five hits while striking out seven times, things didn't look good for the Orem Owlz in the third game of their four-game set against Idaho Falls at UVSC. But with a little help make that quite a bit of help from the Chukars, Orem rallied to score two runs and squeeze out a 4-3 victory. Two walks and an error helped Orem score the two runs that gave the Owlz the victory. Abel Nieves got Orem off to a good start in the bottom of the ninth inning with a single. Luis Rivera and Scott Knazek walked, sandwiched around an out, to load the bases. Pinch-hitter Ryan Mount tied the game with a sacrifice sac-rifice fly to score Nieves. Tadd Brewer followed with a sharp grounder to Chukar shortstop Christopher McCo-nnell. McCo-nnell. He fielded the ball, but his throw was off the mark at first. Brewer was safe and Rivera scored with the winning win-ning run. Cutting to length Available 1 im. J.IIllllI'lllil' JBk 1 . Q .... "You start to feel the injuries, inju-ries, but you just have to push through it and keep going," he said. "The coaches push us as hard as they can. They always tell us to 'practice perfect'." per-fect'." Tigers offensive coordinator coordina-tor Dave Gilchrist spares nothing when talking about Steele's abilities on the football foot-ball field. "He is probably the best talent I've ever coached," said Gilchrist, who has been with Orem for the last 12 years. And he's tough, too. "Last season, (Steele) broke a knuckle on his hand, and he didnt tell anyone for a while," Gilchrist said. "But he played with that broken knuckle for the last four games of the season, sea-son, and every once in a while when he would get hit, you'd hear him yell in pain in the pile. He's an old-school type of guy, kind of like his dad (Orem head coach Robert Steele)." And even though he's a team-first guy, Steele has specific spe-cific goals he wants to reach. But as he runs down the list, it is obvious he knows that his personal success translates into his team's success. "First team all-valley, first team all-region and first team all-state, because I was second sec-ond team last season," Steele said. "1 had 110 tackles on defense last year, and I want to improve on that. Basically, I don't want to just do as well as I did last year; I want to keep getting better." As is often the case, the exceptional ex-ceptional athlete that is Steele is also an exceptional person in other aspects of life. "He's just a good person, a Bruins Continued from Page 6 Davis (when he returns from his ailment), John Daniels, May and Christian Bateman. And isn't the true mark of a leader defined by how that leader serves? Steele can be found doing things like staying long after practice is completed to paint the football field for the upcoming up-coming season. So with all the new faces seeing varsity action for the first time, is Steele worried about the way his teammates are going to play? Not at all. He talks about the prospects of a successful season as if the whole squad is returning. "Our ultimate goal is to win state," he said. And not have a repeat of what happened last year to end the Tigers' season: a 41-14 41-14 loss to Highland in the 4A state quarterfinals. "We didnt perform well at all, I don't know why," Steele said. "I remember seeing all of the seniors so disappointed, and that's how they ended their high school careers. We don't want that to happen again." As for goals after his high school playing days are over, Steele said he hopes to take his game to the next level. And Gilchrist thinks Steele has the talent to do it. "I can see him in the defensive defen-sive backfield, as a run support sup-port guy," Gilchrist said. Steele's hard work in the classroom has opened things up for him, also. With a 3.99 GPA, he said he has drawn interest from BYTJ, Oregon, Princeton and Stanford. "I got a couple of A-minuses on some classes I took at UVSC," Steele said. "Those A-minuses A-minuses bug me." I Chris Peterson can be reached at cpetersonheraldextra. com. "Obviously we definitely want to be competing in every game and go after a region championship," he said. Meek knows that will be a tough goal to reach.
