Tigers take perilous path to final Jared Lloyd DAILY HERALD Trailing by a single point with just more than a minute left, the Orem girls basketball team needed a big play against top-ranked Murray. Tiger senior forward Lindsie Wilson, who had played her bast game in the last few weeks to keep Orem right with the Spartans, attacked. at-tacked. "I was hoping to drive hard and have them suck in," she explained. "But they stayed in position, po-sition, so I just burst and let it go, mostly hoping hop-ing it would go in and then it did." Wilson's turnaround 10-footer banked in, putting Orem up for good as the second-place Region 7 team knocked out Murray, 44-41. "We were written off by everyone today except ourselves," said Tiger head coach Ross Reed. "Now we're just excited to be playing Friday" Fri-day" Even though Wilson's huge shot gave Orem the lead, the Tigers still had to endure another 60 seconds of drama. After a Spartan miss, junior guard Delyse Downey hit a pair of free throws to put the Tigers up three, but Murray still had plenty of time. "During a timeout, the coaches told me to stay on (Spartan leading scorer Keshia) Cat-ten," Cat-ten," Downey said. "They said, 'Don't help anyone any-one else, just stay on her.' I knew they were going to run the double pick because they'd done it before. I got through it just in time and she didn't get a good look." Catten and senior guard Mindy Schvaneveldt both missed treys that could've tied things up, but Murray kept getting the rebound. With only 11 seconds to go, the Spartans set up one more play to try to force overtime, but it didn't succeed. Wilson led the way for Orem, scoring 18 points and hitting 4-of-6 3-pointers. Catten was the only Spartan in double figures, scoring 10 in the losing effort. Semifinals I Orem 45, Timpview 40 With 11.9 seconds left in regulation of the 4A state semifinal game between Orem and Timpview on Friday evening, the Tigers trailed by two points. Needing a big play, Orem turned to senior forward Lindsie Wilson. One of the most experienced ex-perienced players on the floor, Wilson calmly drove past the Thunderbird pressure and down to the baseline. Instead of forcing a shot, the Tiger star waited for the defense to collapse then passed to junior center Jamie Sagers for the easy la- yup- "We were going to run the play with her," Wilson said after the game. "I was hoping (Timpview sophomore) Alexis Kaufusi would come out on me. I knew she could make it." The clutch play sent the game into overtime, over-time, where Orem came up big and earned a berth in the title contest by knocking off the T'Birds. "We made more plays, especially in overtime," over-time," Tiger head coach Ross Reed said. "I thought out-hustled them, from the final minute in regulation after we got down six points." The Thunderbirds scored with over two minutes to go in regulation to build the three-basket three-basket lead, but then couldn't put the game away. Orem came back behind a tough jumper by Wilson and a layup by Sagers, setting up the last-second drive. "We got down and I was thinking. 'Well, it's been fun,' but then we got some turnovers and scored," Reed said. "Then we called the play and Lindsie (Wilson) and Jamie (Sagers) ran it to perfection." Sagers said she was a little nervous she would put it up too hard. "Lindsie (Wilson) drove and it opened right up," she said. "I was a little nervous because I was over so far. I was just glad that it went in." In the extra frame, the Tigers hit three of four foul shots and got a layup to take control. Timpview cut the lead to two on a Kaufusi layup, but then called a timeout the official scorer said they didn't have. Orem put the game away on the ensuing free throws, off the technical foul and a Timpview attempt to stop the clock. Wilson led the way for Orem with 13 points, while Sagers chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds. Kaufusi paced Timpview with 14 points and 12 boards. Never was it more obvious then in the final game, when everything seemed to come together. They were a stone wall on defense, a machine on offense. It might not have been the perfect game, but it was as close as they've come all season. And it came when it mattered mat-tered most, something their more famous counterparts from the other side of State Street couldn't manage.
