He started in the business busi-ness with a Salt Lake Gty company, com-pany, then eventually founded his own company in California. In 1990, he returned to Utah and founded Cover star of Utah, Inc., which now has a 60,000 square foot manufacturing facility in Lindoa Coverstar opened an even larger facility in 2005 in Indianapolis, Ind., to service its growing eastern market. Coverstar manufactures customized cus-tomized automatic and manual pool safety covers as weD as spa covers and components for the pool industry to install on new pools to attach covers. "We have conf igurations for virtually any size and shape of pool," Smith said. With eight st andard colors and another 25-30 shades available avail-able to match pool tiles and deck colors, pool covers can not only be customized to a pool's shape but also to the owner's design preference. A pool cover may seem like a simple device, but the manufacturing manufac-turing pr ocess can be complex. WHAT'S HAPPENING Coverstar President Lanny Smith, Goverstar's in-house equipment uses both local and imported materials to create, shape and assemble each cover with a turnaround time of only a day, even for customized orders. "We don't believe in having a lag time," Smith said. "The speed to market is a very important im-portant factor in the success of our business." Goverstar's efficiency has greatly improved in the last year, Smith said. The company began operations renovation in earlv 2005 with classes and 3 0 right, with his general manager Don consultations that focused on improving the manufacturing process. By October the facility had been completely restructured restruc-tured to improve efficiency, a move that has increased the company's employee stability and overall profits. Smith said he has witnessed a 20-25 percent growth anuaUy for several years as pool covers become expected necessities rather than optional features.
