Mountain View halfback Felecla Marzan (right) fights to control a the ball against Olympus' Brittany Manning during Tuesday's game photos hy I.uikIoii OhimTinws Aciwkiicc mwm mm odd LANDON OLSON Times Sports Editor Maybe Mountain View hasn't been as dominant dom-inant this season as in the past, but from watching Tuesday's game against Olympus it'd be hard to tell. Using a balanced attack, the Bruins struck twice in the first 10 minutes and cruised to the 7-2 win to advance to the state semifinals. semi-finals. One of the biggest factors the Bruins (12-5) point to for their success was unselfish play. With Olympus marking forward Erin Salmon and preventing her from taking many shots, the rest of the Mountain View players play-ers took over. For the Bruins, six players scored. "We've been working on being more unselfish and passing the ball around and that helped a lot. That's : what makes us glue and gel," said halfback Anniken Carter, who scored in the game. Jump starting the Mountain View offense in the first three minutes, Charlotte Lartay came through with the early goal, threading a shot through the defense and slipping it past the goalie far post. Then it was Carter's turn. Forward Ashley Eakins took a cross and Danielle Jaramillo fought to get a head on it. She wasn't able to direct the ball into the net, but instead it went to Carter, who knocked it in point blank. "It was a cross, then Danielle hit it with her head but it was just kind of soft and so I just knocked it in with my foot," Carter said. "It was sweet. Well, I liked it. Kind of a garbage goal." The Bruins would score once more in the first half on an open shot by Eakins, who skipped the ball past the far post and in for the score. Jaramillo picked up the assist. Trailing 3-0, Olympus wouldn't let down. In It was sweet. Well, I liked it. Bruin Anniken Carter on her first half goal the 26th minute, Brittany Manning launched a ball over goal keeper Brittany Harvey's head, and as Harvey attempted to knock the ball clear, it slipped just under the goal. At 3-1, the Titans were still within striking range, especially considering how they came back from a 3-0 deficit in their first round game against Provo. "It's a 0-0 game even though we were up 3-1 3-1 because of the Provo comeback that they had," said Bruin coach Mike LaHargoue. "We just didn't want to give them any fuel for fire." The Titans looked as if they may get that fuel in the final minutes of the half when they were able to earn a penalty kick. But, as Audrey Booth made the attempt, Harvey read the ball the whole way and made the diving save. "She just has a knack for... not guessing right but reads the ball off the foot and she does a good job," LaHargoue said. With the two goal lead going into the second sec-ond half, Mountain View came through with another big key to the game maintaining intensity. "I'm glad that we didn't let down," Carter said. "We played the whole game. That's something we've been working on. Sometimes we let down. It's a good thing we held out, especially since they came back against Provo." That intensity paid off, too. Less than 10 minutes into the second half, the Bruins put another goal on the board. With the defense collapsing toward the comer, Natalie Graham was able to get off a cross toward the goal. The Olympus keeper made the deflection, but Jaramillo was there to knock it home. 'The goalkeeper deflected it, so I just shot it. I knew it was going in as soon as I hit it," Jaramillo said. Even with the goal and a 4-1 lead, Jaramillo wasn't done, In the 65th minute, Salmon was tripped up driving toward the goal and Mountain View was awarded a penalty kick. "As soon as she got fouled I wanted to take it," Jaramillo said. "There's just a feeling when you know you're going to make it and I knew I was, so I was ready." She definitely was, stepping up and calmly rocketing the ball past the goalie to give the Bruins the 5-1 lead. Instead of sitting back and letting time nan out, Mountain View kept building on the lead. With 10 minutes left to play, Salmon finally got free, slipped the ball past the keeper who had come out to make a play and knocked it in to give the Bruins a 6-1 lead. Graham earned the assist on the play. Mountain View would finish up its scoring on a long goal by Cammie Johnson. Finding herself open from about 40 yards out, Johnson took the shot and sailed it just under the bar for the goal. In the final seconds of the game, the Titans would add one more goal, but it had little affect on the outcome. Drawing a penalty, Jenny Leatham took the kick and bounced it off the cross bar and in to make the final 7-2. But by then, the Bruins were celebrating their 11th trip. to the semi-finals under LaHargoue. One of the big strengths for the Bruins was their transition game, which allowed them to distribute the ball and get some scoring opportunities, Jaramillo said. "I thought transitioned really, so that was one of the big things that helped us get lots of goals," she said. "We were always just in the right spot at the right time, which comes from transition." LaHargoue said, "We play at our best when we go to the ball and move and possess. When we play individual, and selfish, we're not a very good team. The last couple of games we've really been a team. This could have been one of the best games we've played all year. Especially against the competition level." Mountain View's next game will be Friday against East, which defeated Mountain Crest 2-0 on Tuesday. Between now and then, though, the Bruins will use some of that time to rest and recover from injuries. Something they were able to do somewhat Tuesday as LaHargoue played all 24 of his players. "We need a little bit of time to rest and recover. We've got some people banged up," LaHargoue said. The state semi-final and final matches are being held at Bonneville High School. Friday's match begins at 2 p.m. The winner will play in the championship game at 3 p.m. Saturday. vu if 8f . k Bruin Ashley Eakins collides with Olympus' Amy Strasser (19) while chasing a ball during Tuesday's quarter final game. feiij8M8i SStt3B mii 1 & 2 Bkdroom with Full Kitciikn & Balcony Washi.r & Drylr in each unit Educational and Cultural Activities Chauit-kurrd Transportation Storage Spac e Onsite Beauty & Barrersiiop Computer Lab & Library.
