LANDON OLSON Times Sports Editor Lauren Layton's senior year has been decisive. It may have taken her some time to make up her mind, and the motivation might not be totally clear, but she's made some big decisions deci-sions and is ready to work toward them. In fact, just this last weekend the Orem senior outside hitter decided what field she wants to study in college. "I've been interested in kind of something in medical, something in that whole range. Over the weekend I decided on nutrition. It's cool, I like it." Lauren said. "It's just interesting interest-ing how food affects you so much." Not only does she know what direction she wants to take once she's in college, but she also knows she wants to play volleyball while she's there. That's somewhat of a recent decision as well. Lauren didn't start playing volleyball until her sophomore year in high school, and even then it was only for fun. She said she tried out for the softball team her freshman year, but when she didn't make that, the coach told her she should try out for the volleyball team. "He was like, Tou have to come out for volleyball because you're tall.' So I did," Lauren said. And she made the team. Although not on varsity the first two years, she played club volleyball and worked her way up to the varsity var-sity squad this season. "Her development from last year to this year over the summer is great. Couldn't ask for anything more," said Orem coach Daniel McKeehan. Taller than most of the girls she goes to school with, the 5-foot-10-and-one-half-inch Lauren said her height took some time adjusting to. "At school sometimes, I'm like, "Whoa, I'm tall, she said. "I've just gotten used to it." It's not surprising she's so tall, having a dad who's 6-foot-4 and a mom who's 5-foot-8, so obviously height runs in her family. Lauren has definitely put her height to good use when it comes to spoils, playing basketball in her youth before she started at volleyball. At first, when she started playing volleyball, volley-ball, she liked it right away but said it was mainly just for fun and a way to stay active. She has played in several of the spots across the front row, seeing time at opposite, middle and outside, but now she's mainly an outside hitter the position she loves. "I get more sets and ...
