It doesn't matter that the Timpanogos senior doesn't have a region win going into the tournament. tourna-ment. It doesn't even matter that she's a tournament underdog in her No. 1 singles position. She knows from experi ence the seedings in the Region VII tournament don't provide any guarantee guaran-tee about going to state, and she's going to try to see to it that the same thing happens this year as last year. Except, this time, she wants to be on the other side of the situa tion. "I'm trying to do the opposite of last year pretty much," she said. "Last year I was going into the region tournament first seed then blew it in the tournament. This year hopefully IH win in the tournament and go to state." Playing at No. 2 singles last year, Madsen was undefeated during the regular region season. sea-son. Come tournament time, though, she lost both of her matches and missed going to the state tournament. "She was one of the upsets, one of the big dogs who got unseeded last year," said Timpanogos coach Suzy Hansgen. "A kid who had beaten everyone every-one all year, she got surprised." But, Madsen is hoping, she'll have some surprises of her own this year, especially knowing what can happen hap-pen come tournament time, and the advantages she'll have going in as a low seed. "They'll just come, 'Oh, I beat her two times, X i M -'A mm She's easy,' so they might not try as hard," Madsen said. "It might give me a little advantage." Plus, unlike having the pressure of being the top seed, she says she can go out relaxed and just play, especially knowing it's her senior year. "I won't feel the pressure as much, so I'm just going to go and play and have fun hopefully," she said. Having fun on the court is something Hansgen said she hopes her top singles player play-er can do, especially with the adjustments at the beginning of the season. Madsen has been playing tennis since she was in sev enth grade, and has been a varsity singles player for Timpanogos since she was a freshman, but moving up to No. 1 singles was a big step for her. Last season she played behind Ashley Young, who has since graduated and moved on to play for the University of Utah, but this season Madsen had to move up into even more of a leadership role. "Huge shoes to fill going into No. 1 singles," sin-gles," Hansgen said. "The girls were all still looking up to her to be a leader and do well and she's got a heavy burden on her shoulders. The girls just look to her. She's a natural team leader. The girls look to her for answers and look for her at practice." It's something Madsen has just had to take in stride, although at times, Hansgen said, there was some doubt from Madsen about the season. "She struggled for a few matches there wondering won-dering whether she should continue to play tennis," ten-nis," Hansgen said. "I think she loves it so much, obviously, that she's going to be OK." While saying a young player loves a sport is sometimes wishful thinking on the part of a coach or a parent, in Madsen's case it's the truth. "I love it. Lot's of my friends are here and we just have fun," she said. And that has been a big step in her bouncing back and building her confidence up, especially knowing now she's in a position where continued on Page B4 . r t pW:-:'.v.-.:v:".:i- ........? .... i' ,- I t ,..TT.r.- MM I.
