Orem June 2002 Layne Pace -Grain's Gvn Apache Helicopter Pilot Each year, one of the most popular attractions at Summerfest is the daunting airborne fighting machine, the Apache helicopter. Orem's own Layne S. Pace, chief Warrant 5 (CW5), has 29 years of service in the Army Air National Guard. We are proud to boast that Layne is also Orem City's Fire Division Batallion chief He has experience flying fly-ing AH-64 Apache and UH1H Huey helicopters. He will pilot this year's Apache helicopter at Summerfest. Pace has served active duty in Kuwait, Korea and Hawaii with combat experience experi-ence in Kuwait, July 2001-February 2001-February 2002. His specific mission, Operation Southern Watch, was the defense of Kuwait from Iraq aggression. Later, he became part of Enduring Freedom,' after the September 11th attacks on America. It's a privilege to honor Layne Pace during Summerfest! The AH-64 Apache is a twin-engine helicopter with four-bladed main and tail rotors and three point landing land-ing gear with the pilot in the rear seat of a two-place tandem tan-dem cockpit. Weapon systems sys-tems include the laser guided guid-ed Hell Fire missile system, the M230 30 mm Chain Gun and 70 mm aerial rocket system. Quantity production was initiated in 1982 and deliveries to the field continue contin-ue today. The Apache can carry 16 Hellfire missiles, 76 70 mm Aerial Rockets and 1200 30 mm high explosive rounds. Each engine can produce 1694 Shaft Horse Power. The Apache empty weight is 14,445 lbs. and 17,600 lbs. with full armament. arma-ment. The main rotor blades are 48.0 feet wide. Overall length is 58.167 feet. Fuselage width (at engine nacelles) is 9.05 feet and maximum height is 15.24 feet. |
