Show Councilman Steven Heinz, then serving as mayor pro tempore, applied for the interim position, along with former Orem Mayor DeLance Squire; former Councilman W. Chris Yandow, Bob Wright, a longtime long-time government watchdog; Shiree Thurston, a member of the Orem Planning Commission; Thomas W. Seiler, an attorney; Steven M. Hansen, a Brigham Young University graduate; David A. Thomas, a BYU law professor, and Bob Davis, current chair of the SummerFest Advisory Committee. Scheduling the evening of August 3, 1999, to interview the candidates, the City Council heard six of the nine persons who had applied. At the beginning of the meeting. Councilman Heinz withdrew his name from consideration for the interim mayor position. Davis and Thomas did not attend the interviews. By withdrawing as a candidate for the position, Heinz was able to serve as mayor pro tempore and conduct the meeting. After closed-door deliberations on the mayoral appointment. City Council members returned to the Council chambers and announced the selection of W. Chris Yandow as Mayor of Orem. W. CHRIS YANDOW After his appointment as Mayor of Orem, Chris Yandow expressed his feelings of honor to have been among the group interviewed for the position. A client-partner with Franklin Covey Company, Yandow said he had his employer's support in assuming his new position. Reflecting on the recent death of Mayor Joseph A. Nelson, Mayor Yandow said, "Orem City has lost a wonderful Mayor. I take very seriously the confidence you have shown in mc in this new assignment." The new Mayor had earlier expressed to some people the feelings which had come to him, earlier, to make himself available for the vacant position. Explaining his family situation, Yandow said that he and his wife, Kim, enjoy a blended family of nine children, ranging in age from three to 13. In his interview with the City Council, Yandow said his wife supported his interest in serving. Due to family circumstances, the new Mayor flew in from Raleigh, North Carolina, to meet his interview appointment.
