Show Milestones of the Twentieth Century Wednesday Jan. 5, 2000 Page 3 1937 Orchard Bounties a desolate prairie to a thriving community, renowned for its fruit production in a span of 50 years. Apples, pears, cherries, apricots and prunes joined the first peaches as substantial cash crops, which found ready markets mar-kets throughout the state. Motorists Mo-torists from all over Utah would drive to fruit stands which became be-came established along Orem's State Street. The quality of Orem's fruit earned for it a national na-tional market, and fruit came to be shipped from Orem by the freight car load. In 1937 more than 500 carloads of fruit were shipped from Orem. These included in-cluded 254 cars of peaches, 203 cars of apples, 36 cars of pears, 32 cars of cherries and four cars of prunes. In the 1960's Orem growers supplied fifty percent of the sweet cherries in Utah County, sixty percent of the sour cherries, twenty-five percent of the apples, forty percent of the peaches, and eighty percent of the pears. Apple growers in Orem produced 175,000 bushels in 1964; 241,300 bushels in 199; and 75,000 bushels bush-els in 1974. Peach growers produced pro-duced 124,187 bushels in 1964; 74,188 bushels in 1969; and 45,000 bushels in 1974, Pear growls produced pro-duced 144,280 bushels in 1964; 97,416 bushels in 1969; and 38,492 bushels in 1974.
