With an glossy 8-0 preseason record, the Timpanogos girls basketball bas-ketball team faced by far its toughest game of the season when it opened Region 3 play against cross-town rival Orem last week. The Timberwolves answered the challenge with a 56-50 victory, their first against a team from the City of Orem, to bring their record to 9-0, 1-0 in the league. "We knew coming in that this was a big game and that we had no chance to have these guys on our home court again this year," Timpanogos coach Carey Hopkins said. "We battled hard and ended up being just a little bit better than they were. It was a huge win because it proved we're right up there with the best. We just need to keep improving" improv-ing" Orem coach Scott Houle was impressed with how well prepared pre-pared the T-Wolves were for his team. "They had a perfect game plan and they executed it perfectly," he said. "We didn't play very well defensively so they were able to do anything they wanted to, especially es-pecially in the post. They're a good team." The Tigers (5-4, 0-1) led by as much as eight in the first half, but Timpanogos came back to grab a one-point lead a the half. From there, the lead see-sawed back and forth until Melanie Davies drained a 3-pointer with just over one-minute on the clock that gave the T-Wolves a four point lead. Steals from Wendy Ott and Korbie Tomlinson in the final minute of play led to free-throw opportunities and increased the final margin to six. "This is a game that could have gone either way," Hopkins said. "We just happened to be ahead when the time ran out." Timpanogos center Aubrey Van Pelt led all scorers with 21 points and Orem guard April Atuaia was close behind with 18. Tomlinson, Davies, Ott and Emily Durrant all contributed in a big way to the win for Timpanogos as well, while Brooke Johnson played good defense and came up with some big shots for Orem. Timpanogos continued region play with a game against Jordan on Tuesday and will take oft'. Hillcrest Thursday. ,4 " After playing Brighton on Tuesday, Orem has its second in-tra-city game Thursday, when it plays host to Mountain View (6-4, (6-4, 1-0) in a literal "Battle of the Brothers," as Orem coach Scott Houle and Mountain View coach Dave Houle square o(T.
