Five teams qualify for the football playoffs The Bruins play Alta at home, and the Hawks are com-ing com-ing off big wins over top ranked Brighton and Orem. Coach Randy Rehrer's team has yet to win a region game and will probably be 0-4 after their clash with Alta. The Bruins were favorites to beat Hillcrest Friday, but mistakes cost them any chance of a victory. The only score for the Bruins Bru-ins in the first half was a 15 yard run from Tyler Rehrer and Mack Henderson kicking the extra point to give Mountain Moun-tain View an 7-3 half-time lead. "1 Tjrrs scorr .1 on a 1 yiri-run with UVSC's Vierkant wins cross country race in Vegas Utah Valley State College's Devra Vierkant, a former Orem High standout, took first place honors at the UNLV Cross Country Invitational. Vierkant, running against four-year competition, set the pace with an 18:37 time. UVSC, however, was able to manage only a third-place finish overall. In the men's race, UVSC took second overall. Southern Utah again took top honors, with a perfect score of 15. UVSC was next at 53, followed by Long Beach State at 79 and Whittier at 107. Southern Utah's Jody Benson, a former UVSC runner, was first individually with a 26:12 clocking. UVSC's top runner run-ner was Kevin Davidson at 27:37, good enough for a ninth-place ninth-place finish. Steve Hooper was 11th at 27:55, and Greg Vander Werffwas 14th at 28:21. f m .. The Bruins had first and goal, but on the first play Rehrer fumbled the ball and Hillcrest recovered. The Bruins forced the Huskies Hus-kies to punt and Matt Stroshine signaled for a fair catch at the 50 yard line. Rehrer bulldozed to the Hillcrest 36, but a Capell interception in-terception ended the scoring . threat. The Bruin defense forced another Hillcrest punt and new life was given to the offense of-fense with 3:00 minutes in the game. . Capell completed passes to Josh Fairbanks and J.C. Davis to start the march downfield, but after the Bruins were stopped on fourth and one ; when a pass to Davis was incomplete. in-complete. The Bruins moved the ball all night against the smaller Hillcrest but, interceptions, fumbles and two missed field goals cost the visiting team any chance of winning. Bountiful 38 Timpanogos 6 Bountiful had a 26-0 half-time half-time lead and the Timber-wolves Timber-wolves didn't cross the 50 yard line until the fourth quarter when Robert Drury scored on a 1 yard run to give the home team their only points. Things don't get any better tonight as Timpanogos travels to Orem to take on the state's number 3 ranked team. Orem sophomores lose The Orem Tiger sophomore football team lost another close contest to the Jordan Beetdig-gers Beetdig-gers by the identical score of last weeks Alta game 14-7. Orems offense has scored only one touchdown in four of their five games this year. The ' offense has had decent success moving the ball but continually gets bogged down inside the opponents op-ponents 20 yard line. Jordan easily moved the ball down the field midway through the first period for a score. Orem matched the Beetdigger score with one of their own with 4:39 remainingin the second quarter on a Mike Barney to Ben Weeks lob from 16 yards out for the touchdown. The first half scoring was set up by balanced play calling by Coach Gilcrist with Orems Doug Overly running for 50 yards on 11 carries, Mike Porter had 23 yards on 5 carries and QB Mike Barney picking up 20 yards on 5 carries. Barney also connected on several quick passes to keep the Jordan defense guessing and off balance. Jordan scored on a questionable ques-tionable pass interference call just before halftime that proved to be the difference in the game. The halftime score ended up 14-7. 14-7. The Tigers held Jordans offense of-fense in check in the second half. The Tigers had several chances to score in the second half led by Orems Cameron Merrill with 37 yards rushing on 5 carries and two defensive quarterback sacks. A blocked punt by Orems John Lau nearly put Orem back in business late in the game but Orem ran out of time on the Beetdigger 20' yard line as the clock ran out Orem will play Timpanogos this week on the Tigers home . field.
