Bob Dornan scheduled for K-STAR K-STAR radio show K-STAR Radio (1400 AM) talk show host Keith Haines announced an-nounced that Bob Dorian, Congressman Con-gressman from Anaheim, California, Califor-nia, will be the guest on "Pulse of Timpanogos" Thursday night, May 5, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. Haines said Dornan, who has filled in for Rush Ldmbaugh on his radio show, will speak about his experiences at former President Richard Nixon' funeral. Venice Gammon admitted she was a little nervous. Most of us would be if we were expecting 1,500 guests. Venice and her husband, Rulon, hosted 1,500 Utah County school children at their dairy farm in Vineyard April 28 for a Farm Field Day. Theme of the event was "Agriculture: Your Connection to Life." The Gammons Gam-mons said that after the day's activities, ac-tivities, they hoped the children would better understand how dependent de-pendent we are on farms for some of the basic necessities of life food and clothing. "Kids today are so detached from farms," said Rulon Gammon. Venice said there had been a "great response" to the first-time event, sponsored by the Utah County Farm Bureau, Utah State University Extension Services, and the Gammon Dairy. Despite rainy, cool weather conditions, only one class of 75 had called to cancel. Even the rain and its natural result, mud, were part of the experience. ex-perience. The Gammons said they and a friend had joked about "al most hoping it storms," because the children would be able to see the reality that life on a farm goes on unrelentingly, rain or shine. The visiting youngsters, the majority of whom were from Alpine Al-pine School District, rotated every seven minutes to different stations, where they heard lectures, lec-tures, saw demonstrations and displays, and also had the opportunity oppor-tunity for some "hands-on" experiences ex-periences feeling wool shorn from sheep, patting chickens, and gently touching a newborn calf. Some of the stations were under straw-filled sheds, which gave some shelter from the intermittent, intermit-tent, light rain. Various commodities groups, such as the Utah Wool Growers Association, Utah Horticultural Society, Utah Beef Council, Utah Dairy Council, Utah Fur Breeders, and the Utah Pork Producers participated in the sta-. tions to tell their stories to the children. The Utah County Farm Bureau's Women's Committee, chaired by Venice Gammon, sponsored a station to teach the children about what farm , products are produced throughout the state. The U.S. Soil Conservation Service also manned a station. Jim Jensen and Jolene Bunnell Bun-nell represented the Utah County 4-H. Jensen had brought a mule and a pony with him, and talked with the children about them. Jensen also explained some of the ' fine points about the dairy cows to the children. 'That's manure," Jensen sajd, in response to a question from one of the youngsters. He then went on to explain that no, the farmers did not wash it 5ff, except for around the udders where the cow is milked, but that the cows shed it with their hair. Dean Miner, USU Extension agent for the county, said about 60 volunteers altogether assisted with the day's activities, including includ-ing 30 teenagers from the Payson Future Farmers of America and their advisers, Nyle Russell and Carl Swenson. Wallace Johnson was one of the Farm Bureau members on hand to help. The Utah Dairy Council had furnished an ice cream treat for each visitor. All in all, it was, as Rulon Gammon summed up, "a fun day." A smoke-filled room can be made to smell sweeter sooner If you set In It a bowl containing a cup of water and two table spoons ammonia for a while. Put it where children can't reach It. i |
