It's the best way to loosen uptight up-tight grass and prevent thatch accumulation, ac-cumulation, said Sherm Thomson, Utah State University Extension specialist in plant pathology. Compacted soils have poor air exchange and water penetration, grass does poorly when growing in this environment, he said. A regular preventive program of aeration each spring or fall will eliminate thatch accumulation and compacted soils, he said. Fortunately snow mold in Utah has not been much of a problem this year because of the limited snow cover. However, Thomson said, there is still the possibility for pink snow mold if the spring weather is cold and wet. "Before the new growth gets ' very long, I advise mowing your grass at 1 to 1.5 inches to remove the dead grass leaves," he said. "And don't worry, this doesn't cause thatch buildup." Thatch is an intermingled layer of partially decomposed grass leaves, stems and roots in a tight organic layer. It accumulates just above the soil surface but below the actively growing green vegetation, he said. "Removal of deal leaf blades will change the appearance of the lawn but will have not lasting effect ef-fect on the health of the law," he said, "thatch is not an accumulation accumula-tion of clippings and is not caused by clippings left on the lawn after mowing." This is why mulching mowers are so beneficial. These specialized mowers improve the appearance of freshly cut lawns while reducing trips to the landfill, he said. Thatch does the most harm when it accumulates more than one inch because it decrease the vigor of turf grasses. It does this by restricting the movement of irrigation irriga-tion water, air and fertilizers, he said. "During wet periods the thatch acts as a sponge and holds excessive exces-sive water," he said. This reduces the oxygen supply available to the roots." On the other hand, when thatch gets dry in the summer it is extremely difficult to re-wet, he said. Thatch also acts as a refuge for insect and disease organisms. As well, the roots of grass plants prefer to grow in the less compacted com-pacted thatch layer. This only serves ser-ves to increase the thatch depth, he said. Root growth in the thatch layer often results in lawns that are hard to mow, irrigate and fertilize. Close mowing or power raking results in a "scalped lawn" that may take an excessive amount of time to green up, he said. In the summer, Thatch buildup also causes drought-stressed and disease-prone plants since it drys out quickly in high temperatures. In this condition, all the fertilizers fer-tilizers in the world won't help. The high organic content of thatch wastes fertilizers because the thatch-decomposing organisms or-ganisms deplete the nitrogen before the grass has a chance to absorb it, he said. This brings us back to holes. Aeration, or coring, removes plugs of grass AND thatch. This process lifts them to the surface and allows the movement of water, air and fertilizer into the root zone. This greatly improves root growth in the soil. When performed per-formed regularly, it reduces and prevents the accumulation of thatch, he said. "Aeration stimulates microbial activity that aids in the breakdown of organic materials, he said. "It also increase the beneficial effects of a wide array of organisms that will complete with pathogens."
