Show Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday, December 15, 1993 Page 16 Statewide Nicotine Patch project to get underway in New Year The American Cancer Society is lookingfor 1,000 Utahns to participate par-ticipate in a statewide low-cost nicotine patch program to help people quit smoking. The Nicotine Patch Project consists of six one-hour weekly educationbehavior modification classes using Lederle Laboratories' Labor-atories' PROSTEP Transdermal Nicotine Patches. Lederle will donate'the first and last weeks' patches free of charge for each patient, making the cost of the program only $22.95 weekly for four weeks, and average of 15.30 per week. There is a $20 non-refundable fee for the six week course. The first classes will begin on or near January 10. FHP patients can participate in a similar program in-house by calling FHPs Health Education Department at 977-4734 977-4734 for information about the program. FHFs program is also at a very low cost. "About 12 to 15 persons form each cessation group and are led by certified facilitator, many who've been ex-smokers," said Walt Bain, RPh, chair of the Nicotine Patch Project. "The methods and activities have been tested and represent the most effective ef-fective ingredients for success," he said. "FreshStart is a realistic quit smoking program that helps participants understand and deal with smoking as a chemical addiction, ad-diction, as a habit and as a psychological dependency." Those eligible for the program must be smokers (no chewers); at least 18 years old; weigh no less than 100 lbs.; be able to attend all six weekly FreshStart classes; smoke heavily; and cannot be pregnant nor nursing. "Chewers were excluded from the project because no scientific research has been conducted to validate that nicotine patches are effective for helping smokeless tobacco users quit using tobacco," Bain continued. "In addition, no research has been conducted on persons under the age of 18 which is why we are prohibited from offering the program to those under the age requirement," he explained. "We are using a 22 mg patch and for anyone smoking less than a pack a day, they would actually be getting more nicotine from the patch we are using than from the amount of cigarettes they smoke." Bain pointed out that the project is statewide with trained facilitator ready to begin classes in Cedar City, Davis County, EphraimManti, Fillmore, Logan, Ogden, Park City, Provo, Richfield, Rich-field, RooseveltVernal, Salt Lake City and St. George. He said if at least six people sign-up from an area that is not covered by the schedule, a program will be setup set-up and conducted in that specific area. Many pharmacies statewide have agreed to waive their service charge for the project while a number of doctors, dentists and nurse practitioners have agreed to waive the office visit charges to write prescriptions for indigent and low-income patients. Project participants must bring their written prescriptions to the first FreshStart class in order to receive their voucher for the patches. "We have pharmacies in Castle Dale, Tremonton, Heber, Clearfield, Morgan, Mt. Pleasant, Farmington, Moab, Cedar City and other cities statewide who are participating in the program, but in some of these area, we don't have any participants signed-up," commented Bain. 'These pharmacists, phar-macists, doctors, dentists, and nurses are offering a benefit to people that is truly altruistic and not enough Utahns are taking advantage ad-vantage of the program. The ACS has reserved 100 spots for African-Americans in the Nicotine Patch Program. They are seeking individuals who are interested in quitting smoking" through the "Pathways to Freedom" program by way of the Nicotine Patch Project. Ordinarily, Ordinari-ly, only the behavior modification techniques are used for the course, but the chances for success suc-cess in quitting will be greater with use of the patches. The Nicotine Patch Project is cosponsored by Lederle Laboratories, FHP and Mc Kesson Drug.
