The Warriors took fourth in state last year, and looked to be strong again, but as Zirbes said, "I thought they were better than they were." The Warriors ended up offering offer-ing Orem little challenge. The Tigers raced to a 27 point win in what Zirbes called "probably our best game so far this year." Orem jumped out to a quick 19-7 first quarter lead then remained strong to end the half up by eleven. ' The Tigers put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors 17 to 4. Orem's balanced scoring attack earned the Tigers thirteen more points to finish out the game. Adrienne Honeycutt led the Tigers with 15 points. Susan Bahr had ten points for Orem, while Lindsay Tate and Shaanta Kamai each added nine. Orem 61 Payson 38 The Tigers extended their record to 5-0 Thursday with a win over Payson in spite of "a really slow start," Zirbes said. Orem struggled in the first quarter after an ineffective press left them down 8-12. But the Tigers turned things around almost immediately. Orem rallied to outscore the Lions 18-7 in the second quarter Mountain View swimmer Josh Rowland takes a breather between races. Tigers, Bruins earn titles at Utah County Meet to end the half on top 26-19. The Tigers were just as strong in the second half, outdistancing Payson by a 35-19 margin. "After the first quarter I thought we played really well," Zirbes commented. The only real threat to the Tigers was Payson's star post player Julie Hansen who managed 20 points for the Lions. Orem's win was again marked by balanced scoring. Shaanta Kamai led the Tigers with 15 points. Susan Bahr and Angie Hall contributed 10 points each to the win. The Tigers faced Timpview yesterday, 4A's unanimous number num-ber one pick in the state polls. Game results were not available at press time. Orem travels to Viewmont tomorrow. BYU Campus roads to be closed on Christmas Day All roads on the Brigham Young University campus will be closed to vehicular traffic for a 24-hour period beginning at midnight mid-night on Christmas Eve and continuing con-tinuing to midnight on Christmas Day. In keeping with Utah State statutes, the campus is closed every third year to maintain private ownership rights over campus roads. All roads leading to campus will be barricaded and posted; however, Provo Police and Fire Department vehicles may enter as necessary to handle emergency calls. University Police officers will also be posted on campus to help reroute traffic. For more information, contact the BYU Traffic Office at 378-3906. Orem Tigers down p. Fork fall to Provo By Gina Clark Sportswriter Orem 83 Spanish Fork 60 The Tigers picked up their fourth win Tuesday when they defeated Spanish Fork. According Accord-ing to Orem Coach Robert Louder, the Tigers' win wasn't very pretty, but balanced scoring and some strength down the wire sealed the 23 point victory. 'We played a little sloppy, but held on and opened up another lead," Louder said. Orem took a 14 point lead into the third quarter, but the Dons fought back, chopping the Tigers' lead to just three points to begin the fourth quarter. Orem regrouped and held on to defeat Spanish Fork solidly. Jordan Heaps had 15 points in the win, while Shane Belliston and Terry Andersen added 14 and .13 points respectively. Orem 36 Provo 52 At Provo on Friday, the Bulldogs were a bit too much for Orem to handle. After matching Provo point for point to open the first quarter, the Tigers stalled for the final four minutes of the quarter while the Bulldogs made good on two three point situations to grab a 17-8 lead. Orem lost Eric Crow to an ankle injury to start the second quarter as the Bulldogs' hot shooting bolstered their 11 point lead. The Tigers attempted a rally, before the half with a couple of key steals, but miscues on the other side of the court made a comeback short-lived. The Tigers opened the second half with a two-minute offensive dry spell while the Bulldogs paced themselves to a 15 point lead. Orem chopped the lead to ten with a minute remaining in the quarter, but the Bulldog sharp shooters restored the lead to finish the quarter ahead 38-24. The final eight minutes were more of the same for Orem. Fouls and turnovers kept the Tigers on the wrong side of the momentum as Provo muscled their way to the 52-36 win. Brian Gardner was the only Tiger in double figures with 10 points. Provo's tough defense only added to Orem's shooting woes Friday night. "I didn't think we played as physical as they did," Louder said. Orem looks to improve their 4-1 record tonight when they host Payson. The Tigers also travel to Cedar City this weekend to participate par-ticipate in the SUU Invitational Tournament. I) V'" Orem swimmer Karen Woolley comes up for air during recent meet. By Gina Clark Sportwriter The Orem and Mountain View swimming squads emerged victorious vic-torious in Saturday's Utah County High Invitational Swim Meet. The Tiger girls took home the top finish scoring 447 points. The Lady Bruins followed with 272 ; points. In the boys races, Moun- tain View earned the top spot with ;373 points. Orem's boys squad ;took second place, garnering 306 I points. 7- "I was just thrilled. We had "some great swims from some -kids," Bruin Coach Doyle Asay commented. Asay's squad takes "on American Fork Thursday in their first region meet. The Cavemen are a young team, so the ;meet will be "a learning experience" ex-perience" for both squads, Asay ;said. The meet begins at 3:30 p.m. and will be held at American Fork. Last year Asay's boys team took the region four championship and looks to contend for it again this season. But with the new region alignment, Asay says, it should be "more of a challenge." Orem Coach Dan Miller was happy with his team's wins at the Utah County Meet and at their first region meet with Hillcrest on Thursday. The Tiger girls "cleaned the clocks" against Huskies, Hus-kies, he said. Orem faces Brighton Thursday at the Orem Fitness Center pool. The Bengals are one of the most dominant programs in Utah high school swimming and have about 13 straight swimming championships to their credit. "If there is a team to beat, they're the team to beat," Miller said.
