OHS Songleaders take first in state The Orem High School Varsity Songleaders brought home the first place award at the U.SA. (United Spirit Association) State Competition Competi-tion held at Cottonwood High School, Saturday, December 4, 1993. The squad, under the direction of Stephanie Perry, consists of Cap tain Amanda Moody, Kelly Judd, Jennie Gilchrist (seniors) Jennifer Jen-nifer Horne, Amy Ford, and Angela An-gela Beckstrand (juniors). This state competition win also qualifies the squad to compete in the National U.SA. Competition held in Anaheim, California in March. Also qualifying was the J.VySophomore Squad from Orem High School, receiving 4th place in the J.V. Show Cheer Division. Other top awards in Utah County went to Timpview High School Varsity Co-ed Cheer, their J.V. Squad, and Spanish Fork's All Girl Show Cheer Squad. Utah Regional Ballet to perform "The Nutcracker" at BYU The excitement of the Christmas season starts early at the Utah Regional Ballet. When "The Nutcracker" rehearsals begin in late October, little ballerina bal-lerina sugar plums, cookies marzipan mar-zipan and ribbon candies catch the spirit of its magic as with fairies and snowflakes they being their roles in the enchanting production. Artistic Director Jacqueline P. Colledge and her staff are well into training the dancers for their parts and polishing the cast and soloist numbers. Costume Mistress Sarah B. Price and Scenic Designer Bill Kirkpatrick are finalizing their preparations on the elegant costumes and breathtaking scenery that are such an integral part of the beauty of "The Nutcracker." The Tchaikovsky Ballet, with original choreography by Colledge Col-ledge runs December 18 through 22 at the DeJong Concert Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University. Because Be-cause of popular demand a performance perfor-mance on December 23 at 7:30 p.m. has been added. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m.. on December 18, 21, 22, 23 plus matinees at 2 p.m. on December 18 and 22. The matinee on December 20 is at 5:30 p.m. Evening Eve-ning performances and the Monday Mon-day matinee will include a live orchestra under the direction of Clyn Barrus. Tickets are available this year through a new URB 24-hour ticket number. 1-800-34-DANCE. Tickets Tick-ets for the general public may be obtained at the Music Ticket Office BYU, 378-H.F.A.C. Matinee performance per-formance tickets are $8.00, evening eve-ning performances $9.00. Students, Stu-dents, faculty and groups may get a $1.00 discount. Tickets are now on sale. Guest artists for this year's production are Michael Onstad as Drosselmeyer with principal guest artists Joseph Woefel of.U.R.B., . Chen Xiao of Atlanta Ballet, and Jiang Qi of Ballet West. These principal artists will alternate in the roles of Snow Prince and Cavalier. Tiffany Pace, Melissa Davis, Christina Gee and Amanda Yeager dance the role of Clara. Christopher Chris-topher Best and Ned Armstrong perform Fritz. Sean Hare is the Nutcracker Prince. The ballet also features U.R.B. soloists Angie Sumsion, Lorraine Adams, Traci Alleman, Giuliana Bule, Jessica Harston, Steve Best, Teresa Adams, Brian Debes, Brit-tnee Brit-tnee Colledge and Amy Holland. Children from all over the valley val-ley were selected at auditions in October. Over 300 auditioned for the 120 parts, because "The Nutcracker" is such a delight to the young, performances are scheduled for school children. Schools in the area make arrangements arrange-ments to bring their children to the DeJong Concert Hall for this special spe-cial treat. Utah Valley PAF users groupto meet Dec. 18 The monthly meeting of the, Utah Valley PAF (Personal An-' cestral File) Users Group will be on Saturday, December 18, 1993 from 9:00 until noon in the LDS "red chapel" at 4000 North 650 East (Timpview Drive) in Provo. The opening presentation will be by Judy Gere of McAfee Associates. As-sociates. Her topic will be "Computer "Com-puter Viruses and What You Can Do to Protect Yourself." Computer Com-puter viruses have become a major problem with up to 10 new ones being uncovered each week. After the opening presentation, several classes will be held discussing dis-cussing PAF ad other aspects of computing and genealogy. The public is always invited to the meetings, whether members of the Users Group or not. The Utah Valley PAF Users Group currently current-ly has about 300 members with about 100-150 people attending each monthly meeting. Members receive the eight page monthly newsletter "Pafology." Some of the top Tigers were: Jerry Pearson, 112; Travis Pyne, 130; Tyler Mitchell, 140; Brett Daniel, 152; Cameron Porter, 160; Richard Robbins, 171; Barrett Stratton, 185; Israel Arciniega, Heavyweight. Orem also earned the top spot at the Lehi Tournament Saturday. Satur-day. The Tigers scored 212 points, followed by Bingham with 183. Four Tiger wrestlers won their weight divisions: Tyler Mitchell, Brett Daniel, Richard Robbins, and Israel Arciniega. Coach Robert Steele's squad hosts Alta in their first region meet Thursday. According to Steele, the Hawks will offer the Tigers some of their toughest competition this year. Although it eliminates wrestling powerhouse power-house Pleasant Grove, the new region remains competitive with Alta and Brighton, Steele added. The Tigers look to contend for the title again this season with a strong group of senior wrestlers. "They're a good bunch. If we can stay healthy, we can be fairly successful," suc-cessful," Steele commented. Orem hosts Lay ton next Tuesday Tues-day then travels to Provo Wednesday. Orem MAACO Center tops $1 million in sales For achieving $1 million in sales, Orem MAACO center owner Bruce Keetch received a Super Bowl champion-style ring at the chain's recent convention in Hawaii. The nine-year-old center, cen-ter, located at 574 North State Street, was also honored as a leader in trade and fleet work. The 1993 convention was held Nov. 17 to 21 at the Ritz Carlton Mauna Lani hotel on the Big Island Is-land of Hawaii, where a total of 60 centers were honored for outstanding out-standing performance.
