WAV Activities and Happenings . v J Utah Valley State College Helps students gain international experience A UVSC student who participated in a foreign co-op program not only improved his German.lDut his experience opened the door to many unexpected career opportunities. John Tippets participated in a UVSC co-op program in Austria from June to September of 1993. He worked the front desk and coordinated references in three hotels, for business guests from Switzerland and England. "I have received several job offers from the people who came to the hotels," said Tippets. "Because international business is growing, a foreign experience is necessary to meet people and network. You learn things that can't be taught in the classroom." His experience in Austria helped him gain a position at Novell where he currently tests and translates software in German. Tippets, from North Carolina, is working towards a degree in international business. He plans to continue his education to get an international management business administration (IMBA) degree. UVSC co-op programs have taken students to Germany, Austria, Japan, and Taiwan, for on the job training and an in-dept study of the language, land, and culture. "The educational value of the experience is fantastic," said Ken Ewell, assistant director of cooperative education at UVSC. "The international business program provides a basic foundation for individuals to enter the international division of a domestic company," said Jim Lane, UVSC business management instructor. "You can read about or theorize about a country all you want, but until you have walked the streets of that country, you don't know anything," said Lane. "When a student finishes school with a foreign experience behind . them, companies can't help but sit up and take notice," said Ewell. Symphonic Band to perform winter concert The UVSC Symphonic Band conducted by Wayne Erickson, will present its Winter Concert Thursday, December 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the new Sorensen Student Center Theater. Among the pieces performed will be "Commando March" by Samuel Barber, "Fanfare and Allegro," by Clifton Williams, "American Civil War Fantasy" by Jerry Bilik and a new work by Robert Washburn entitled "Kilimanjaro: An African Portrait." Featured in the concert will be special guest Timpview High School Symphonic Band, conducted by David Fullmer, which will perform "The Sinfonians" by Clifton Williams. In addition, various Christmas selections will be offered by both bands, including "Emmanuel Variants" by Robert Foster, "Greensleaves" by Alfred Reed, and "Sleigh Ride" by Leroy Anderson. The evening will mark the first concert held in the new Sorenson Student Center Theater. The concert is open to the public. Admission is free. UVSC study to travel to San Diego UVSC is offering a study tjjavel program to San Diego, Ca., concentrating con-centrating on threatened and endangered species. A professional wildlife biologist will broaden understanding of the wildlife issues. Hands-on experience will be gained during visits to the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Sea World, and Cabrillo National Monument. Monu-ment. Cost of the trip is $359 per person (double occupancy). Bonneville Elementary turkey Trot a success Early Saturday morning, November 20th, approximately 200 children and patrons from Bonneville Elementary gathered ' at Bonneville Park. They eagerly awaited the signal from Mr. Wathen, the principal, to begin the first ever mile and a half "Turkey Trot." Each entrant donated a can of food or a dollar in behalf of a local Homeless Shelter. Shel-ter. The brisk morning temperature tempera-ture seemed to create even more enthusiasm and bounce in the participants as they anticipated this event. Gary Downey of the Lakeridge Ledger by Cheri Roberts Student Reporter The results of the boys' and girls' basketball games and there was a great victory for both teams. Friday, the boys played Judge Memorial and won 60 to 44. The girls played Provo on Wednesday and won 49 to 29. Way to go for both teams! Also this week is our door decorating contest and the doors will be judged on December 13 and we know there is going to be a good bunch of doors to choose from. This Friday is going to be our Sub for Santa dance and we are going to charge a $1.00 at the door. This year we are going to donate the money to Mrs. Capell, an English teacher that was in a bad accident over the summer. We hope that we can raise lots of money for that donation. That's all for this week! Orem Police Dept. provided a police escort for the runners. Guidelines were given and the race began. As each contestant crossed the finish line, a gift certificate for a free Arby's Junior Roast beef Sandwich was presented. Joe Martinez was the first Bonneville student to cross the finish line. After the race, each contestant contest-ant placed their name tag in ajar. Eight names were then drawn from the jar and those eight individuals in-dividuals each received a free turkey. Winners of the turkeys were Kim Dabbs, Nate Brandon, Meredith Veatch, John Anderson (Amy's Grandpa), Wendy Ott, Brittney King, Ryan Rocque and Bill Sawaya. Special thanks was expressed to Allen's, Macey's Smith's and Gary Norton for their To Get His Car Ready For winter.
