Well, think again. Allergies don't disappear disap-pear during the cooler months. In fact, exposures to allergens like dust mites, molds and animal dander -- all found in the home -increase significantly during the winter months when we spend the majority of our time indoors. But don't -think you have to be miserable because you are allergic; aller-gic; there are ways to make the home environment less amenable to these allergens. According to Lanny Kosenwasser, M.D., Allergy Aller-gy Specialist at National Jewish Center for Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver says, "Emphasis should be placed on ridding the bedroom of allergens." aller-gens." While at home, both adults and children spend the majority of their time asleep in bed. "So, treating the bed is the first priority when trying to allergy-proof allergy-proof one's home," says Rosen-wasser. Rosen-wasser. Studies show that carpet accumulates ac-cumulates allergens at 100 times the rate of bare, polished floors; so, if possible, install hardwood floors. If hardwoods are not in the budget, then vacuum weekly t while the allergic person isn't at home, using a high efficiency particulate par-ticulate air (HEPA) vacuum or attach a HEPA filter to youf current cur-rent vacuum. To reduce mold, use a dehumidifier. Some final suggestions sug-gestions to minimize winter allergens aller-gens in your home: dust furniture; furni-ture; wash children's favorite stuffed toys in water over 135 degrees Fahrenheit, and bathe pets weekly to remove dander.
