Show Wednesday, December 1, 1993 Page 10 Buy your Christmas tree like you would a loaf of bread Orem-Geneva Times Would you buy a loaf of bread that is not fresh or moist? The same holds true for Christmas trees. You're not going to eat your tree, but a dry, old tannenbaum makes excellent food for fire. "Once needles dry out on a tree they do not easily re-moisten, even when the tree is placed in a stand with water," said Michael Kuhns, Utah State University Extension forester. 'The best way to ensure that your tree is fresh is to buy from a local grower or from a retailer you trust." Out-of-state trees sold in many Christmas tree lots may appear fresh, but they can be old and dried out, he said. To check for freshness, Kuhns said to gently pull on several needles. need-les. If many come off, the tree is suspect. You can also life the tree and strike the butt end on the Yoel Levi to lead Utah Symphony Dec. 3-4 ground. Again, if many needles fall off of the twigs, the tree is probably not fresh. Finally, pull off a couple of needles and streak them to see if they are moist and fragrant. There's no need to worry about old, unattached needles accumulated accumu-lated inside the crown. Though these needles can be messy and a fire hazard, he said they do not indicate a poor tree. They can be easily removed. Once a fresh tree is purchased, keep it outside until you are ready to decorate it. If you store it in a place where it doesn't freeze, re-cut the bottom of the stump and set it in water. This opens the tree's vessels. ves-sels. Keep it away from sun and wind to prevent drying. When you are ready to bring the tree in, he said to apply a fresh cut at the bottom of the stump one more time if it has been stored very long. Once inside your house, the tree should be placed in a sturdy stand that holds at least one gallon of water. A fresh tree can lose this much water a day. Old-fashioned Nearly six years after last leading the Utah Symphony, Yoel Levi will return to Abravanel Hall on Dec. 3 and 4 as guest conductor.
