(801) 226-5125 Many investors worry too much about when to buy a stock and too little about when to sell it. Often, they sell when a stock reaches a target price and then reinvest rein-vest the money in another stock. People who use this technique tend to be traders rather than long-term investors. Many professional money managers agree that you can't make much money by frequent trading. Rather, they say, you must hold the winners for the long term to compensate for the inevitable losers. Traders, on the other hand, generally gener-ally argue that the most significant moves happen at the beginning and later taper off. One advantage in long-term investing over short-term trading is that you generally gener-ally know more about a company you've owned for a while than the one you plan to buy. This does not mean one should never sell winners. One way to take profits is to gradually scale down a winning investment. invest-ment. For example, if a stock has doubled in value, you might sell half of your shares. That way you have preserved your original capital without completely liquidating your investment and giving up all chance of additional gains. You might consider the same strategy if your portfolio is overconcentrated in one stock. You should, though, consider selling ALL of your holdings in a particular stock when the fundamental reasons for which you bought it change. Investors should try' to buy value at reasonable prices. Eventually, a stock may reach a point when it is no longer a value. Once a stock becomes overvalued, it's just as likely to underperform as it is to overperform. Thai's when you should carefully consider getting out. However, frequent buying and selling can be costly and claim much of your profit or worse, add to your loss. Commissions can be a significant cost even if you use a discount broker. Additionally, Addi-tionally, taxes could claim a third or more of your profits. Long-term investing invest-ing makes a lot of sense when you consider con-sider the costs of in-and-out trading. WHY SHOULD YOU PLAN YOUR OWN FUNERAL? 1 i s it by planning your funeral. Hearts and checkbooks open wider at this time of year as more people are contributing money to their favorite charity. The Utah Department of Commerce, Division of Consumer Protection is issuing a warning to consumers against fraudulent charitable organizations, or-ganizations, and cautioning them to check out charities before they donate. "Requests for donations greatly great-ly increase at this time of the year and unforturtately, fraudulent charities crop up to prey upon the generosity of consumers," stated Constance White, executive director of the Utah Department of Commerce. "Consumers need to be cautious and take the necessary neces-sary steps to make their holiday contributions worthwhile White said consumers can take several precautions to avoid becoming the victim of a charitable rip-off: . "Utah law requires charities to inform donors of this information, but only if they ask," stated White. If you are contacted by an organization claiming to raise money, call the Division of Consumer Con-sumer Protection (530-6601) to verify that the charity is registered. However, just because a charity is registered does not mean that state government is endorsing that particular charity. Some charities are able to give larger percentages of collected col-lected funds to their cause than others. Although no legal percentage per-centage rate is required, a charitable organization must state the rate on their application. applica-tion. Some charitable organizations organiza-tions play the "name-game." Many fraudulent organizations will use names that closely resemble the name of a well-known well-known charity. You might think that you are contributing to a nationally na-tionally recognized charity when in fact you might be giving money to a phony. V "Many organizations, using titles similar to well-recognized organizations, launch fundrais-ing fundrais-ing drives around the same time as legitimate organizations," stated White. Don't be fooled by a name that looks impressive." When you do make a donation, dona-tion, it is a good idea to pay by check and to make the check out to the organization-not the person per-son collecting the donation. "Be cautious of organizations that pressure you to give money on the spot," warned White. "Legitimate charities will gladly ' take your donation today, tomorrow, tomor-row, or a year from now." Hospital zone By Jeanne Thayne City Editor During a public hearing Nov. 22, council members approved a Hospital Overlay Zone that paves the way for, a high-rise hospital building and accessory buildings to be constructed on 800 North. According to Ed Stout, Development Services Director, the hearing was held in response to inquiries made to his office about building a small to mid-scale mid-scale hospital in the city. Most recently the inquiry was from Health Trust Inc., which proposes a 120-bed hospital at about 800 N. 800 West. Initial plans show the proposed hospital would be larger than Orem Community Hospital, but smaller than the Utah Valley Regional Medjcal Center.
