Show Wednesday, September 16, 1992 Page 1 1 Two teachers share "Teacher of Year" honors Orem-Geneva Times 3 Two teacher wills hare "Teacher of the Year" honors for the Alpine School district this year. Jean Ekins, a Special Education teacher at Hillcrest Elementary, and Frank Garrett, a Resource teacher at Highland Elementary, have been named co-Teacher co-Teacher of the year of 1993. The two were introduced to the Board of Education at ceremonies held in conjunction with the board's business meeting held last week in American Fork. "These teachers were chosen for this recognition in competition with many other exceptional teachers from throughout the district," dis-trict," said Assistant to the superintendent, super-intendent, Mr. Jack Reid. "The honor is symbolic gratitude for their contribution to the lives they have touched during their dedicated careers." Jean Ekins has spent a total of 15 years as an educator. In addition to the teaching of the Intellectually Handicapped, she has taught dance and physical education. She has also been involved in-volved in numerous inservice and curriculum development projects for the district. Her philosophy of education expresses a concern for the development of her special student: "I want my students TIPS We want the scoop on what's happening in Orem. Cali in news tips. "Therefore, I have a heavy academic agenda in the mornings, morn-ings, with integration and mainstreaming activities in the afternoons to build social skills, self-esteem and friendships. My reward comes from teaching when a child learns skills necessary neces-sary for survival, when I have put forth my best effort, and when I feel a child's love." Jean lives in the Provo area. Parents can learn to elp their children enjoy family activities, communicate more openly, feel good about themselves themsel-ves and accept responsibility more cheerfully. The Gathering Place, in conjunction with Alpine, Nebo and Provo School Districts, is now enrolling interested parents in a free nine-week course called "Developing Responsible Children". The course will be held once per week for a two-hour session beginning September 22nd, 23rd and 24th. A choice of locations and days is offered with free materials and child care. Mayor Stella Welsh of Orem and Mayor Joe Jenkins of Provo are both endorsing the "Developing "Develop-ing Responsible Children" Course. Three Orem residents earn Masters Degrees at USU Stacy D. Salmans Stacy D. Salmans, Orem, has completed requirements for a master of education degree in health, physical education and recreation from Utah State University. He attended Orem High School and received a bachelor of science degree in physical education educa-tion from Southern Utah State College in 1985. He is the son of Lei and and Carcrtee Salmans of Orem and is . marrred to Sally G. Salmans, formerly of Kamas. For part of his masters requirements re-quirements at USU, he completed at pilot study of the effects of visual feedback on bench press. Salmans is head volleyball coach at Orem High and is a certified cer-tified strength and conditioning specialist with plans to become certified in athletic training. David G. Nelson David G. Nelson, Orem, has completed requirements for a master of education degree in physical education from Utah State University. He attended Viewmont High School and received a bachelor of science degree in physical education educa-tion from BYU in 1975. He is the son of David G. Nelson Nel-son and Kathalee B. Nelson and is married to Zeffie Sheriff, formerly of Centerville. For part of his master requirements require-ments at USU, he completed a project on year-round strength training for baseball pitchers. Linda Rae Mineer Anderson Linda Rae Mineer Anderson, Orem, has completed requirements require-ments for a master of science degree de-gree in elementary education with an emphasis on gifted and talented education from Utah State University. She is the daughter of Byron and Ha Mae Mineer of Fairfield, Calif., and is married to Kirk M. Anderson. She earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education from BYU in 1984 where she graduated cum laude. Anderson is currently teaching teach-ing in a magnet school for gifted children. Art All red earns masters degree Art Allred of American Fork and formerly of Orem, has completed com-pleted requirements for a master of education degree in health, physical education and recreation recrea-tion from Utah State University. Allred is a graduate of Orem High School and received a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Brigham Jbung University in 1971, where he attended on an athletic scholarship in football. He is the son of Robert H. and Shirley D. Allred of Orem, and is married to Janet Stevenson, formerly of Orem. For part of his masters requirements re-quirements at USU, he completed a project, a tutorial disc for educators concerning diabetic students and athletes. Allred is employed as a teacher and coach in the Alpine School District, where he has worked for 20 years. UVCC instructors attend Development Program Two Utah Valley Community College (UVCC) faculty members have been selected to participate in the Phi Theta Kappa Leadership Development Program. This program pro-gram provides special training in leadership skills to honors society students. "It is fundamental that our honors students gain special training train-ing in leadership skills. Hopefully we can provide UVCCs honors stu-dents stu-dents with additional opportunities oppor-tunities in an educational setting to better prepare them for contributing con-tributing later in life," said Elaine Englehardt, UVCCs associate professor of ethics. This development project is funded by a $1.8 million grant from the W.K Kellogg Foundation Founda-tion of Battle Creek Michigan. The W.K Foundation was established estab-lished in 1930 to "help people help themselves." As a private grant-making foundation, it provides money to organizations and institutions that have identified problems and have designed constructive action programs aimed at solutions. The Foundation supports programs in the broad areas of agriculture, education, health, leadership and youth.
