View win state track title Go iris Kmmmmmmlmmxmmmmmmmmma LI(MI, ,m By Candace Perry 'They performed the way you hope a team would at state," smiled Mountain View's coach Dave Houle. And he wasn't the only one smiling. Mountain View, the defending State Champions, once again won the state track title with a total of 93 points, leaving second place American Fork with only 66. Houle was chosen as Coach of the Year by the other head coaches after his girls took first, which wasn't a surprise as he won that very same award after his girls Cross-Country Team and girls Basketball team both claimed their respective State titles. This is the second year in a row that Mountain View has conquered con-quered the opposition to win the State Championship. And with athletes like the Lady Bruins, it's no wonder. Friday started out with Becky Perry jumping an incredible 18-5 12 in the long jump. This jump should have broken her own state record set just a few weeks earlier in the BYU Invitational, but officials offi-cials deemed the jump as wind-aided, wind-aided, and unfortunately Perry Highlights: State Boys 200 Meter Sprint: 1) Stowell, East, 22.12; 2) Hansen, Skyline, 22.34; 3) Colby Sanders, Mountain Moun-tain View, 22.69 3200 Meter Run: 1) Adam Reeves, Bingham, 9:31.60; 2) Chris Merkley, American Fork, 9:32.91; 3) Sam St Clair, Mountain Moun-tain View, 9:39.77 1600 Medley: 1) Viewmont, 3:33.31; 2) Cottonwood, 3:36.17; 3) Mountain View 3:37.45 Javelin: 1) Bill Schuffenhaur, Roy, 186-3; 2) Todd Lewis, Orem, 179-0; 3) Pete Foreman, Alta, 172-5 Discus: 1) Jared Passey, Mountain View's Kirt Seale Cottonwood at the State Track Ml HV5 Athlete of the Week JARED PASSEY. MV Bruins lose hopes for state soccer championship By Kevin Young The Mountain View Bruins' quest for the State soccer championship cham-pionship came to an early halt Friday after a disappointing loss to the Highland Rams, 3-2. Early in the game it looked like the win would be an easy one for the Bruins. Seventeen minutes into the game Junior Brent Hirschi scored on a well timed pass from Brian Jolley and the Bruins jumped to a 1-0 lead. The momentum from the goal kept Bruin spirits high and held the Rams' offensive progress to a minimum. With seven minutes left in the half, Bruin Jim Henderson scored on a kick that floated under the crossbar, just put of the goalkeeper's reach, fv At halftime the Bruins led 2-0 ' and the statistics told the story. Mountain View had 12 shots on goal compared to Highland's three. But the Bruins didn't recognize the advantage -or disadvantage that a 25 mile per hour breeze can provide. The Bruin defense did it's best to keep the ball on the Rams' end of the field but the wind made it nearly impossible. Players and fans alike recognized the severity of the problem when a kick by the Rams' goalie sailed the length of the field. After two bounces the ball landed in the hands of Mountain Moun-tain View's goalie. Highland scored 11:30 into the half on a shot by Highland's Jared Holman and the Rams narrowed nar-rowed the Bruins lead to one. Just nine minutes later the Rams tied the score with a penalty kick. Both teams failed to score in the remaining minutes of regulation regula-tion play and the game went to overtime in a 2-2 deadlock. The Bruin field was indeed somber at 10:15 on Friday night. A few Bruin players chose to console con-sole their loss in the silence of a dark stadium corner. Others found tranquility in removing the net from the goal. Dazed and lost in anguish, some just sat on the bench. There were tears from Slayers who had taken harder its during the season and not flinched. But the bruises, cuts and falls were not nearly as painful pain-ful as the loss. "It was if a hand came out of the darkness and took the championship cham-pionship away from us," said Coach Dave Wolley. "We made a few mistakes and that cost us the championship." For the season, Mountain View captured the Region title and ended with a 14-3 record.
