One of the very earliest examples of stone memorials was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, Greece, was a magnificent burial palace built by Queen Artemisia in 353 B.C. in memory of her husband, Mausolus. The word mausoleum comes from his name. In later years, not only royalty, but ordinary people, as well, have been memorialized memor-ialized by tablets of stone. Marble, granite ana agate are shaped and inscribed with meaningful sentiments and likenesses appropriate to the life of the one being laid to rest. The City of Orem Cemetery features a wide variety of stone markers set flush with the ground to allow for careful maintenance of the lawns. Modern technology has made it possible to include a photograph of the loved one, as shown on some of these stone markers found in the City of Orem Cemetery: By Clyde E. Weeks Managing Editor One of the most beautiful spots in Utah is the City of Orem Cemetery, nestled below majestic Mount Timpanogos in a peaceful setting where people can go to reflect and remember. But, it was not always thus. Prior to 1943, the residents of this community had no such place to bury their dead. Since there was no cemetery in Orem, they had to travel to neighboring towns which did have cemeteries that would accommodate their needs. In some instances burials took place on the private properties proper-ties of local residents, especially in the early days of the community. com-munity. The history of the City of Orem Cemetery goes back to July 11, 1941, when the Orem City Council named Mayor B.M. Jol-ley, Jol-ley, Antone Rohbock and Mrs. Donna York as a committee to investigate the advisability of es tablishing a cemetery on the Shaya farm, located between the Provo Reservoir canal and the Alta Ditch canal at 800 East 1500 North. 108-ACRE SITE On the recommendations of that committee Orem City purchased pur-chased the 108-acre site from the state of Utah for $4,500. Included In-cluded with the property was ten shares of Alta Ditch water. So, on March 17, 1943, the city approved plans for laying out the cemetery on the slopes of Mount Timpanogos. The area was landscaped and trees were planted to make the City of Orem Cemetery one of the best situated and most beautiful cemeteries in the state. MEMORIAL DAY 1991 Memorial Day 1991 finds the 21.75 acre cemetery laid out to accommodate 26,850 graves. There are now 2,816 graves in the cemetery, with over 150 people having been buried there last '"'"I J VTITF-3 uf I 1 1 year. Cemetery lots are now 40 x 100 inches in size and 26 percent (7,078) have been sold. With some 300 burial lots being sold each year at $250.00 each, the City of Orem Cemetery can meet the needs of the community com-munity for the next 65 years.
