UV Family Support Center reorganizes Director Board The Utah Valley Family Support Center, a United Way organization that strives to prevent all forms of chM ab"use, has recently reorganized reorganiz-ed its board of directors. , - ,. Linda P." Walton, Orem, is the new chairperson of the board's Public Awareness Committee. Receiving her bachelor's degree in public relations at Utah State University, Walton is president of The Walton Group in Pro-vo. Pro-vo. She is also chairperson of the Utah County Chapter of the American Cancer Society. ' Michael D. Call, Orem, has also been appointed to the board of directors direc-tors and will serve on the Public Awareness Committee. Call studied public relations at Brigham Young University and is currently an account ac-count executive with The Walton Group, a public relations agency. He has volunteered with the Special Olympics, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and the United Way. Call has also worked as the public relations director for the Southern Utah Division of the March of Dimes. Registered nurse Deanne Francis, Fran-cis, Provo, is the new chairperson of the board's Fund RaisingCommunity RaisingCommuni-ty Relations Committee. With a bachelor's degree from the University Universi-ty of Utah, Francis works in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center. She has also served on the board of the March of Dimes for 17 years. Betty Rollins, Provo, is also on the Fund RaisingCommunity Relations Rela-tions Committee. Leslie W. Slaugh, an Orem attorney at-torney with Howard, Lewis, and Petersen, is the new chairperson of board's Organization and Personnel Committee. He received both his bachelor's and juris doctorate degrees from Brigham Young University. BYU student JoAnna McCormick is serving on the Public Awareness Committee. She brings the perspective perspec-tive of a mother who has used one of the Center's programs. Elizabeth A. Johnson, a recent Orem High School graduate and a BYU student, is serving on the board and will head up the new Youth Advisory Ad-visory Board. Johnson has been a candy striper at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and is now employed with Empire Title. "These changes will be beneficial because the new board members are professionals in the particular fields," said Julie Mackay, board president. COUPON 1 BUY 1 GET 1 FREE coupon a a a a a Utah Valley Symphony announces 88-89 season Utah Valley Symphony opens its ' thirty-first season on schedule October Oc-tober 12 with its gala opening concert in Provo Tabernacle and without any salary problems symphonies across the nation are having this year. Utah Valley Symphony's 90 members are unpaid and completely volunteers; who meet for the joy of playing. Conductor Dr. Ralph G. Laycock begins his eleventh year as musical' director and conductor "My aim," says Laycock, "is to give the community com-munity an orchestra which is the best and most professional possible." ., Business Manager Beverly Dun-ford Dun-ford says, "I sympathize with the financial problems of professional orchestras or-chestras because our yearly expenses run $45,000 and our board and guild work extraordinarily hard together with the symphony members to raise the expense money needed to cover our concert season." All concerts begin at 8 p.m. in the Provo Tabernacle and are scheduled . this year for October 12, December 7 and 8, Youth Artists January 25 and 26, Spring Concert March 15, and Pops Concert April 19. Sharon School receives inservice grant from Utah Arts Council Students at Sharon Elementary School in Orem are enjoying courses in Dance Education thanks to an in-service in-service grant from the Utah Arts Council which provided a husband and wife professional dance team, Pat and Kathy Debenham, to teach at the school. The couple live in Orenu Sharon School was selected out of several applicants to receive the grant and was given the choice of having hav-ing a professional artist from the fields of MusicOpera, Theater, Arts Crafts and Dance. The school selected Dance Education. All of the children in the school are participating in the program with teachers donating extra hours to receive in-service workshops in this area. A performance demonstration by the 1st grade will be presented on Sept. 30 from 12:30 to 1 : 15 p.m. for the studentbody and interested patrons. "We are very lucky to have been given this opportunity and the students are really enjoying it," says Mrs. Linda Young, 4th grade teacher. The instructors provided by the grant are Pat and Kathie Debenham of Orem. - Kathie Parsons Debenham has been actively involved in dance education for ten years. Since receiving receiv-ing an M.A. from Brigham young University in 1976, she has worked in elementary, middle and secondary school settings, and has taught at BYU. The evening will be all Russian music including in-cluding Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "The Tsar's Bride." Christmas will include traditional tradi-tional Christmas carol singing, the Hallelujah Chorus and Benjamin Britten's "Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra" narrated by Conductor Conduc-tor Laycock. Young artists chosen by audition will perform January 25 and 26. Spring concert will feature Dr. David Dalton as guest conductor and a piano duo from Austria, Susanne Neumuller and George Kem, doing the Mozart Double Concerto. The orchestra will also perform the "Gayne Ballet Suite" by Katchaturian. Pops concert lovers will hear Daron Bradford, saxophone, April 19. Working within the physical, mental, and social abilities of the age group, through non-threatening, structured improvisational experiences, he brings the students from "where they are" to a new awareness of themselves as creators, spectators, and performers. A faculty member at BYU, Pat is the artistic director of The Dancers' Company, which recently completed an international tour of the Orient. He is co-founderco-artistic director of Contemporary DANCEWORKS.
