DIETARY FIBER: WHAT The National Cancer Institute advises Americans to eat 20 to 30 grams of dietary fiber each day. Current research indicates that only ten percent of the adult population popu-lation eats this recommended amount The average American consumes about 11 grams of dietary fiber a day, which means that most people should double their fiber intake. There are two important questions ques-tions that need to be addressed: Why should you add fiber to your diet, and how do you go about doing this? Why Add Fiber Eating a diet ) igh in fiber and low in fat has many benefits. Besides Be-sides helping to reduce your risk of certain kinds of cancer, preliminary prelimi-nary research also suggests that diets high in some types of fiber may help reduce blood cholesterol levels, which decreases the risk of coronary heart disease. Increasing fiber in the diet also appears to modify certain gastrointestinal disorders dis-orders such as constipation, hemorrhoids hemor-rhoids and diverticular disease. Dietary fiber may also help satisfy the appetite while providing fewer calories. How To Add Fiber Fiber is found in whole-grain cereals cere-als and breads, fruits and vegetables, and dried beans and peas. Another especially good source of fiber is bran cereal. Gradually add these high-fiber foods to your diet and don't be afraid of trying new foods and recipes. Bran cereal enhances the taste and texture of the crust while increasing increas-ing the fiber content of this luscious dessert.
