Show 1 V v 1 - - illiSlilltl Orem-Geneva Times Wednesday June 1, 1988 Page 7 41 It 0 Mf f 'Pirates of Penzance' at BYU outdoor patio The Pirate King (Eric Glissmeyer) crosses weapons with the Sergeant of Police (Jeff Nielsen) in "The Pirates of Penzance," scheduled for June 10, 11, 14, and 15 in the northwest patio of the Harris Fine Arts Center at BYU. Tickets for the 8:30 p.m. performances perfor-mances are available through the music ticket office, 378-7444. Millions of Gilbert and Sullivan devotees dot the globe and know every phrase of both the music and libretto from the famous 19th-century operetta team that gave England a unique type of musical entertainment and prompted a cult. They call themselves ' 'Savoyards," named after the Savoy Theatre where the Gilbert and Sullivan operas enjoyed acclaim. Brigham Young University has its own "Savoyard" with Dennis Todd, a senior in music whose classroom success suc-cess directing scenes by the musical duo yielded him an opportunity to launch a full version of "The Pirates of Penzance" in the northwest patio of the Harris Fine Arts Center in June. "Pirates" will open June 10 at 8:30 p.m. with additional performances perfor-mances June 11, 14, and 15. Tickets are available through the music office, of-fice, 378-7444. "I'm a long-time Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiast who has studied extensively to gain expertise," he explains. ex-plains. "I have attended the annual meetings of the Savoyard Society and am a devotee." He considers the "Pirates of Penzance" Pen-zance" to be the best by far of Gilbert and Sullivan because , he says, "while it is the most British Victorian of the operettas, it is also the most universal." Todd sees some particular irony in the evolution of "Pirates." "International copyright laws weren't in force," he says, "and people peo-ple could visit England and reproduce the music and lyrics for production in America . without paying' any royalties. This happened to the popular 'H.M.S. Pinafore, for example." "As a foil to the copyright pirates, Gilbert and Sullivan took 'Pirates' to America first and it took off immediately. im-mediately. So the brilliant team wrote about the pirates at sea to take care of the pirates on land." "Pirates" has had extensive success suc-cess in the 1980's. It was revived on Broadway where Linda Rondstat, who had been known primarily as a rock singer, began to show a fuller range when she played the maiden Mabel. , The operettas were written as commercial ventures with Gilbert and Sullivan and impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte. D'Oyly Carte opened the Savoy as a theater for a string of operetta "hits" that included "Patience," "Pa-tience," "Ruddigore," "Yeoman of the Guard," and "The Gondoliers. "The operettas were never intended in-tended to survive the test time, but they were-and I think 'Pirates' in particular is-brilliant," says Todd. Gilbert was in his element as a satirist, but Sullivan, one of the most recognized English composers at the time, set store in much more serious music. Yet except for occasional revivals of his symphony and incidental inciden-tal music, the operettas are his lasting legacy. Sullivan's music is noted for its melodic felicity, light-fingered light-fingered orchestration, and gift for pastiche and parody. w- '"Pirates' is wonderful for people who have never seen opera and wonderful for children," says Todd. "It combines swashbuckling with comedysatire and romance. It also has more emphasis on acting and characterization than you normally get in opera. I think it's a delight. In fact, my only disappointmet is that in directing the BYU production, I don't get to perform in it." The production will begin with a short overture. Todd intends to play it with "absolute honesty," even during dur-ing the silly scenes, because he doesn't want to parody the work. "When 'Pirates' reaches its most zany and crazy parts, there is usually usual-ly a moment when the operetta becomes serious and pulls some true life human drama into focus. The scene where Mabel and Frederick bid , each other a tearful good-bye is powerful. The music is beautiul and heightens the moment. At least three scenes show genuine, honest drama to play against all the fun." Scheduled to perform June 10 and 14 in major roles are Stephanie Buckley as Mabel; Alejandro Gomez as Frederick; Eric Glissmeyer as the Pirate King; Ruth Christensen as Ruth; Jeff Nielson as the Sergeant of Police; and Clayne Robison as the Major .General Performing those roles June 11 and IS will be Marilyn Gneiting, Stephen Schraedel, Eric Glissmeyer, and Marie Adele-Black, Greg Buttars, and Steven Fucile.
