She is one of the speakers. Her daughter Chris Gibson also will be a speaker. Others include La Vera Terri, Becky Wakefield, and Kristy Kirkel. Betty will don her cap and gown along with daughters, Chris, 19, and Ruth Gavin, 17. All of the women dropped out of high school early to establish families. But the dream to graduate never went away. "I tried a couple of night schools, correspondence courses at BYU, went to UTC - none of them really worked for me," said Betty. Her daughter Ruth told her about Mother's School. "I thought my own education was over," Ruth said. "It was Ray Cordner at Orem High who told me it didn't need to be." Soon Betty and her four year old son Jerry, Chris and baby daughter Brandee, 1 month, and Ruth and daughter Amanda Marie, 11 months, were all attending school together. Ruth is graduating a year ahead of schedule. . While the sign on the door says Young Mothers School, it is open to any mother who wants more education. educa-tion. Babies and toddlers attend also. There are cribs, playpens and play areas for the little ones right in the classroom. "Back in the dark ages when I went to school, pregnant students or even pregnant teachers were not allowed in the school," laughs Betty. She is grateful for the opportunity for her daughters to attend and finds it worked best for herself also. Established in 1977 under Alpine School District's alternative school program, the school operated quietly quiet-ly as an optional education for young women who found themselves pregnant preg-nant before they'd completed high school. "These women find themselves struggling, sometimes trying to help support families and find they need that high school diploma," says Maria (that's pronouned with a long "i") Winegardner, a counselor at the school. "They wander aimlessly. Here they get lots of support, a nursery for their children, as well as counseling." "At first I thought, what do I need counseling for," mused Chris. "Now I know I couldn't have done it without the counseling here." Chris also praises the school program. "We learn to cook, prepare and serve whole meals, not just cookies and cake like I had in school before." Students also learn to shop and budget. In addition to home living courses the curriculum includes word processing, pro-cessing, office practice, math, history, English and science. Only the toddlers in the room make it different than other schools. "It's like home but better than home," says Betty. "I've tried that and teachers here make a big difference. dif-ference. They are real caring and patient pa-tient people." Betty says the school' gives the girls a lot of on-hand experience ex-perience and they all pull together and help one another. "I've learned more here in nine months than in six years." In addition to caring for her 10 children, Betty took care of her invalid in-valid mother in her home for five years. "It was never the right time to get back in school. I worried about neglecting my family." Now the worry is over. The diploma is in hand. And mother and daughters can look back on a great achievement. Both Chris and Ruth plan more schooling. Chris wants to try college and Ruth plans to go into dental assisting. For others who haven't completed com-pleted high school there also is an Adult High School under the direction of Alpine School District. Marilyn Olson, Russell J.
