BILL HERL1N Ricks Winning Grid Team Includes Two Orem Grads The Ricks College football program hasn't had a losing season since 1980 and this year is proving to be no different. Ricks has either won, or tied, for the Intermountain Collegiate Athletic Conference every year since 1980. This season, competing in the newly formed Western States Football League, the Vikings are again battling for the league lead. The WSFL was created by combining the ICAC (made up of four teams from Idaho and Utah) and the Arizona Community College Athletic Association Conference. The latter brought six Arizona junior colleges into the league to make up one of the most competitive conferences in junior college football. The Vikings are headed by Coach Ron Haun, now in his fifth year as mentor. Haun's current record is 31-9 which includes a 1-1 record in postseason post-season competition. Ricks won the inaugural Valley of the Sun Bowl in 1981 and was defeated in the same bowl last year. Last season Ricks was able to place 15 players with major colleges. The most notable of the 15, is Jason Buck, a starter on defense for defending national champion. Brigham Young University . The Orem Tigers ran on the 3-mile course just one week after region and just four days after the Mt. Sac Invitation in Walnut, California. The only question was, were the Tigers ready for the important im-portant state meet? The boys' 4-A race started off very fast, with a 4:53 first mile. The Orem runners stayed close with Dave Shuley 15:39, Chris Hammond 16:16, Mike Daniel 16 : 19, and Martin Welsh 16:25. Then Kurt Black of Davis and Kerry Easthope of Roy spread the lead out and broke away from the pack. The two stayed close together still Kurt Black 15:14, outsprinted Kerry Easthope 15:16, to win individual in-dividual honors. Dave Shuley, the Tiger's number one runner all season came in eighth place. Shuyley noted that it just didn't feel the same. Shuley was right about not feeling the same, anyone who had seen the Tigers run before knew that this team should have given Weber and Bonneville a battle for the state trophy. . Team honors went to Bonneville taking first with 62 points, and having three runners finish in the top ten. Weber took second place with 88 points. Alta, who tied Orem at region takes third with a score of 95 points. The Orem Tigers finished fourth with 133 points. Ore'ms Coach Scott Walkinshaw was concerned before the race about his team being consistent, he added, "Every runner hasn't run good on the same day, and that might be critical at state." But the Tigers were just physically tired after three races in one week, and returning from the nation's na-tion's largest prep cross-country meet Sunday evening. After the race, in talking to his team Walkinshaw said, "I think the trip to California contributed to the showing at state." Walkinshaw addd-ed addd-ed that he was the one to blame for this one. The Mountain View girls, who were picked to win the 4-A title did exactly ex-actly that last Wednesday. The Bruins girls won with 34 points, Brighton came in second with 78 points, Weber 112, Alta close behind with 114, and Orem finished out the top five with a score of 151.
