Joint Task Force Proposes ProvoOrem Chamber Merger "I think it's an idea whose time has come," says Margaret R. Nelson, co-chairman and representive of an ad hoc committee selected to investigate in-vestigate the merits of combining the Chambers of Commerce of Provo and Orem. Orem president Duane Herbert said he's been on committees to look into the matter several times before but "it just never seemed quite right. The idea surfaced again a few months ago so we decided to name a task force to study the issue." Herbert said he wanted to know how the Orem members felt about a merger. Three forums for members to give input were held this week. A decision is scheduled to be made November 11. About 10. members showed up at the noon forum last Monday. There were about five in favor and about four against merging, said Steve Densley, executive director direc-tor of the Orem Chamber of Commerce. Com-merce. While the eight members of the Consolidation Task Force signed the report favoring the merger, the feelings feel-ings were not unanimous. One of the committeemen, James Mangum, a former mayor of Orem, said very firmly in a separate interview, "In no way do I agree with the report. I signed sign-ed it because it represented the majority ma-jority vote, but it was certainly not the pulse of everyone." Mangum said, "It will blow the cities wide open if they go ahead with this. I think the task force really missed the boat by not reporting the negative side." One of the major advantages cited in the report for merging is to save dollars, also to streamline operations opera-tions and to reduce duplicaton of services. ser-vices. "Political clout" was another advantage mentioned. "We feel it will save effort and time and we can be more professional," profes-sional," says Provo President Ron Tiffany. He says a lot of time and effort ef-fort is wasted with both chambers seeking members. Some businessmen get badgered by both groups now. About 30 members belong to both chambers. CD Jenos 11 Oz. Li U Jerry Washburn, chairman with Nelson, said the financial advantage is the major positive in the merger. "It's just not a matter of good or bad, black or white," he said. "We simply responded to a request to look into the merger and found some positive things." He said if the chambers did not merge it would not be considered an extreme negative for either one. However, he pointed out the influence the joint chambers could have in state and county political issues. "However, there may be problems locally," Washburn said. An immediate benefit to members would be an across-the-board cut of 10 percent in membership dues. "This demonstrates good faith that a merger will make our dollars go further," said Nelson. Another major saving would be the elimination of one executive officer. of-ficer. However, it would mean that Densley would have to reapply for his position. He has served in the post for less than a year. Provo's director resigned several months ago. Asked whether or not a board combined of members of both cities could be unbiased in their representation represen-tation of the business community, Tiffany Tif-fany said, "I don't think anyone is wholly unbiased because even within our own chambers we disagree. . .but those problems can be overcome. . , " Nelson added that there would be .-subdivisions .-subdivisions within the consolidated chamber to allow various business interests in-terests to promote an isolated geographic area separate and apart from the business community as a whole. "We don't feel the promotion of individual interests is inconsistent with the promotion of group interests," in-terests," said Nelson.
