"It's part of our civic involvement," says President Julius Smith as he refers to the Arbor Day planting of a Scotch Pine. Working with city staff, a committee selected the location and type of tree to be donated. It (Scotch Pine) completed a set of seven trees designated on the official planting; guide for the Arboretum. The planning, purchasing, and planting of this tree were all done by committee members from the Golden Kiwanis: Spencer Sowby, LaVell Christensen, Charles Loris, John Glines, John Shepherd, and Milton DeGering. Praising the efforts of these men, Smith Reported, "I just tell them what need to be done, and they do it." This is the third tree the Golden K Kiwanis members has presented to the City. Summing their involvement simply, Smith said, "We do civic things!" Among their contributions are proceeds from the City Center concession stand, which are used for service projects, cleaning yards and painting homes for widows, helping at the recent Health Fair at the Recreation Center, and the donation of special tricylces to the American Fork schools for handicapped students. By keeping their eyes opened and listening, members of the Golden K Kiwanis of Orem learn of needs, then do what they can. Treasure Hunt Fun Dear Kris: I really enjoy your column and have found lots of useful ideas to use in my present role as a grandmother. I thought I would share one or two ideas with you that I used successfully when my own children were little. 1.) Treasure Hunts. This was probably the most used of all my methods of getting something done in a fun way, though I also used a variation of it just to arrange little surprises for the kids. One variation goes as follows: When the children come home from school there is a note pinned on their pillow (or on their coat hanger, or their closet door, or their bulletin board, or whatever) that reads: Change your clothes, then look under the green lamp. Under the green lamp is a stick of gum (or something) and another note which reads: Take out the wastebaskets (or whatever chore) and then look in the bread box. In the bread box is a banana and another note which says: Fill the wood bin, then look behind the TV . . . Anyway, you get the idea chores and small rewards, and a lot of anticipation and fun in between. We often sent our kids on long, complicated treasure hunts in search of a birthday present, or some other special thing, this time, of course, without the chores. 1 I I .0 ' ill V J 1145 North State, Orem Bare Root Reg. Twenty Things Must Go Another quick one: Play "Twenty Things Must Go" and you can pick up a cluttered room in a hurry. Everyone picks up something calling loudly "One" "Two" "Three" etc., in turn, and by the time "Twenty" is reached, the room is pretty much back in order. A little treat or reward is in order, too ! Mrs.G.D. What fun ideas, G.D. Treasure hunts can also be used as a teaching tool. Place several items around the room of a certain color or shape. Then have your pre-schoolers go on a hunt for everything blue, or red, or round or square, etc. It's fun and the particular color or shape is learned quickly. Divide and Conquer When there is a big job to get done, it's accomplished quicker and with less complaints if it is divided into a lot of little jobs. I'm sure you've all tried dividing supper clean up according to duties, such as having one person clear the table, one wash, one dry, etc. For a change, have one person clear, wash and dry all the glasses, another all the plates, and another the Phone 224-2121 Close Out Bare Concord Other Grapes 'EACH Interlaken Seedless Concord Alden Delaware Fredonia Niagra Himrod White Muskrat Suffolk Red -...SWT $5.99 Buffalo $4- $5.99 Sale Plants a$jy ' Beautiful Potted Jfft'; Rose M, Bushes -Wednesday, May 1, 1985 X'm silverware. To eliminate confusion, it's best if everyone takes turns. When there is a big load of dishes to be done tell each child to wash, or load if you have a dishwasher, five items. Silverware doesn't count, Depending on how many children participate, there may be none or only a few dishes left for Mom to finish up. The same idea works good for a quick yard clean up. Depending on how messy the yard is, assign each child a certain number of items to be picked up. i' Don't Be Left Holding The Bag Next time you come home from the grocery store with several bags of groceries, don't spend the next 30 minutes putting everything away. After having the children help carry in the bags, ask each of them to put away all the items in one bag. Sometimes, just for fun, put a little treat in each bag for the little helper. Make it something you like just in case you get left holding a bag or two. A big job gets done in a jiff y.
