Enjoy the scenic beauty of Gymnasts Attains Title Through Hard Work It has been a season of "firsts" for coaches Brent Henninger, Barbara Bar-bara Jo Ekins, and their "tantalizing tumblers." These "firsts" have been to include taking a state title and retaining re-taining the region title for the fifth year in a row. "First," after Orem head coach Brent Hardcastle felt that he should continue his coaching career at Alta, the mighty Tigers had a big hole to fill on their coaching staff. Not only did the Tigers lose their head coach, but they also lost team captain Teri Joe Walker due to a ruptured disk in the lower regions of her back. It appeared that Orem may not be able to do as well as they had in past years but in stepped Brent Hin-ninger Hin-ninger and Barbara Joe Ekins. They took Orem's gymnastic team to its first state championship. Although the absence of Walker was painfully felt, such gymnasts as Tricia McMaster, Kelly Blinzinger, and Alice Skousen worked twice as hard to fill in for the talented athlete. Alice Skousen retained her title as the best individual gymnast in the state as she captured the all-around title for the second year in a row. But the road to success came as a result of a lot of hard work and dedication. Skousen has captured most of the all-around titles through pre-season and region competition. On April 17 Orem finally took the state title they had been searching for ' the past six years. Skousen played a major part in the success Orem has on the memorable evening. She won the beam, vault, and all-around title, and with a score change on her floor routine the Tigers found themselves in the first ever tie in the 13-year history of Utah high school gymnastics. The mighty Tigers were tied with ' Jordan Beetdiggers, six time defending defen-ding state champions, both with identical iden-tical scores of 176.40. April 18 proved also to be a sue-cessf sue-cessf ul day for , the 'tantalizing tumblers' from Orem. Skousen won . the vault, beam, and floor events and tied with teammate, Kelly Blinzinger, on the bars. First place was awarded award-ed to Blinzinger because the head judge gave her a higher score on this apparatus. Each girl had a score of 9.15. But that didn't hurt Skousen as v she came back appearing untouched h with a total of 37.125 and the all- f arround title. . Although Skousen performed ex-' ceptionally, there were many other , team members who also performed. -: with dominating excellence.
