Orem-Geneva Times- Li. , - ' ; v - . i ... Scaffolding just inside Orem City Library is part of preparation for an elevator to be installed there. The cost of $100,000 for the elevator is funded 100 percent by CDBG funds under the facilities for handicapped program. Next year a similar elevator will be constructed at the Senior Citizen's Center in Orem. The library elevator should be in operation by mid-summer. OHS Juniors Show Skills In State Math The Utah State Math Competition took place on March 25. Out of approximately 4,000 participants Orem had three Juniors do very well. Gary Adams and Brad Wilson tied for 10th place in the state and Adam Wooley placed 12th. ; When compared to other 11 graders, Gary Adams and Brad Wilson tied for 4th place in the state and Adam Wooley placed 6th. Next year each school will select its top three students as a team and a team score will be computed. Had this team system been used this year, Orem High School would have tied for 2nd in the state on the basis of the above scores. The same three juniors would have placed first in the state among all juniors. :- Editor Slated To Speak At Fellowship Day Karen Shepherd, Salt Lake City editor and publisher, will be the speaker for the May Fellowship Day observance, May 3 in Provo. The ; annual event, sponsored nationally by Church Women United, will be held this- year at the Community Congregational Church, United Church of Christ, 175 North University Avenue, at 7 : 30 p.m. May Fellowship Day brings Christian women from many traditions together in an ecumenical worship experience to address their social concerns. This year's theme "Our Piece of Action," challenges church women traditionally involved in caring for victims of social inequities ' to deal with root causes and become directly involved in action that brings about social change. Shepherd is the editor of Network Magazine which she describes as' a publication "for women and for the men with whom they live and work." She is president of Webster Publishing in Salt Lake City. She grew up in Provo. Her parents, Ralph ,and LaVerna Felker still live in Provo. She graduated from the University of Utah receiving a B.A. degree and later earned her Masters degree from BYU. She is past Director of Salt Lake County Social ' Services and' past Director of Salt Lake County Social Services and past Director of Continuing Education at Westminster College of Salt Lake City. She is married and has two teenage children.' Church Women United has a long history of addressing the causes of social justice and taking part in the political process to accomplish their goals of empowerment of women, economic justice, human rights and peace. It is a national movement and the catalyst that brings Protestant, Roman Catholic and Orthodox women together into one "community of caring." Representing a broad spectrum of religious tradition, race, age, economic status and ethnic background, these church women work ecumencially through a national unit, 51 state units and 1,800 local units. This year's observance in Provo is sponsored by Women in Christian Service of the Community Congregational Church, U.C.C. The event is open to the public. ' Orem Woman Earns Law Degree Cindy Steel of Orem, a daughter of James J. and Corena Steel, was among the 126 students who received Juris Doctor degrees during the 110th Commencement services recently at Brigham Young University. This was the 10th graduating class from the J. Reuben Clark Law School. A total of 2,789 students from 48 states, the District of Columbia and 38 foreign countries received degrees at the service. Steel will be a summer clerk for Jones, Waldo, Holbrook and McDonough in Salt Lake City. This fall she will clerk for the Circuit Court in Washington, D.C. She graduated in 1979 from Logan (Utah) Senior High School where she was valedictorian and graduation speaker, Sterling Scholar ; in English and a member of the Debate Team and Future Homemakers of America. Steel graduated magna cum laude upon receiving a bachelor's degree in history from BYU in 1982. She received a dean's scholarship, was college convocation speaker, attended law school on an academic scholarship and was lead note and comment editor for the La w Review. J lnJed OHS Orchesis Wins Award At Disneyland Orem High School Dance Club received an outstanding performance award at Disneyland, recently. In appreciation for the outstanding performance "Orchesis" received a limited edition lithograph celebrating Disneyland's 30th anniversary. Disneyland spokesman Betty Buyers said, "We are always impressed with the talent in 'Orchesis.' We are grateful for them sharing their talents with our guests." "The group represented Orem and the high school well," according to Collette Smith Tregeagle, director of "Orchesis" for the past 5 years. "They acted in a very professional manner." "Orchesis" performed at Disneyland as part of a week long tour of Southern California. They also performed at The Disneyland Hotel, Century City, and Sea World. "The tour gave members of 'Orchesis' an idea of what performing professionally would be like," said director, Collette Smith Tregeagle. "Orchesis" was also able to take a professional dance class at the University of California at Irvine. Ken Green, who conducted the class commented: "I'm impressed with the caliber of dancer trained at Orem State Farm Honors M.Griffiths Mike Griffiths, an agent for State Farm' Insurance Companies in' Orem;rhas earned membership in the companies' Multi-Millionaire Club, on of State Farm's highest honors. Griffiths joined State Farm in 1981. This is his third year to qualify as a Mulit-Millionaire. In addition, Griffiths has been honored as a member of State Farm's prestigious Millionaire Club. Ricks College Announces Graduates Ricks College awarded 1,329 degrees at its 96th annual commencement exercises held April 18inRexburg. Over 900 students took part in the ceremonies held in the Hart Auditorium on campus. Commencement speaker was Ardeth Greene Kapp, Young Womens General President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Special guests in attendance were Idaho Governor John Evans and Idaho Congressman Richard Stallings. President of Ricks College, Bruce C. Hafen, who will be leaving Ricks College to accept the position as the Dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, gave some farewell remarks to the class of 1985. Following commencement exercises, graduates were awarded diplomas at seven separate convocation ceremonies. There were 365 students graduating in Social Sciences, 174 in the Division of Religious and Family Living, 120 in r. Natural Sciences, 92 in the Industrial Science Division, 74 in Arts and Letters, 80 in Agriculture, and 425 students with undeclared majors received general education diplomas. Servicemen Jeffrey H. Pierce Airman Jeffrey H. Pierce, son of Joan F. Pierce of 524 East 400 South, Orem, Utah, has graduated from the U.S. Air Force dental assistant course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas. During the course, students were taught to assist dentists in all dental treatment procedures. They also earned credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force. Pierce is scheduled to serve with the Air Force Medical Center at Boiling Air Force Base, Washington. He is a 1982 graduate of Orem High School. P.A.McKendrick Patrick A. McKendrick, son of John L. and Elzar L. McKendrick of 470 North 500 West, Orem, Utah has been promoted in the U.S. Air Force to the rank of captain. McKendrick is a missile launch officer with the 52nd Tactical Fighter Wing at Spangdahlem Air Base, West Germany. His wife, Ramona, is the daughter of Edward and Necia L.
