The additional money will be used to bolster mosquito abatement district activities as well as to begin surveillance in areas which do not have an abatement district. Mosquitos are not only a nuisance, but can also present public health problems as well. Diseases such as encephailitis are carried by infected mosquitos. Although cases of encephailitis in humans is uncommon in Utah, there is the potential for cases this year. "Prevention is the key to this type of public health concern. We . are working with the mosquito abatement districts to keep the mosquito population down as much as possible. We are also montioring the mosquitos to determine whether or not we have any that may have the encephailitis virus," said Lee Shaw, Department of Health spokesman. Any cases of encephailitis are generally first seen in animals, such as chickens and horses that are out all night and have greater exposure to mosquitos. The mosquito abatement districts will be monitoring chicken flocks around the state and working with state veternarian on the livestock population. The Department of Health recommends people take certain precautions to avoid mosquito bites this summer. These include the use of insect repellents, wearing long-sleeved long-sleeved shirts and long pants in the evenings when mosquitos are the most active, avoiding marshy areas where mosquitos are most common and making sure there are no areas of standing or stagnant water in yards for mosquito breeding areas. Fitness Tips Spirulina Claims Are Exaggerated Dale Nelson, Professor, Utah State University and member of the Governor's Council on Health and Fitness Health-food enthusiasts have been laboring under the impression that Spirulina-a species of blue-green algae that grows in brackish ponds and lakes - is a highly nutritional food. Tablets of dried spirulina are said to be packed with protein and micronutrients, including large quantities quan-tities of vitamin B12, which is missing miss-ing from vegetarian diets. Some companies com-panies marketing Spirulina also promote pro-mote therapeutic benefits in the treatment treat-ment of diabetes, liver disease, ulcers, and obesity. All of these claims are misleading, exaggerated, or false, according ac-cording to the "Tufts University Diet and Nutrition Letter," June 1983. Yes, Spirulinfi does contain vitamins and minerals, but it is inactive, reports Victor Herbert, Professor of medicine at Downstate Medical Center in New York, who recently analyzed three brands of Spirulina tablets. He found that more than 80 percent of their "vitamin B12" content was, in fact, a mixture of what are known as analogues, or forms of the vitamin that lack any useful biological activity. activi-ty. Dr. Herbert even raises the possibility that these analogues might indeed block the action of true B12, and hence produce a harmful rather than a healthful effect. Spirulina is said to be "the most protein-packed food in the world" because it contains 65 percent protein. The Tufts University authors point Have Fun at the UTAH COUNTY FAIR AND RODEO Spanish Fork Fairgrounds Aug. 17-20, 1983 out tne misleading aspect in this claim by reminding us that the percentage of protein in food means little, because proteins vary greatly, not only in quality, but also in the degree to which they are digested. Both hair and gelatin, for example, are 100 percent protein, yet hair is entirely en-tirely undigestible and gelatin is of poor quality. "Even when Spirulina is taken in recommended doses, the amount of protein that is usable is small,"according to the Diet and Nutrition Letter. Finallv, the claim that Spirulina is an all-natural, safe diet pill because it is high in the amino acid phenylalanine, which supposedly acts directly on the appetite center of the brain, has been challenged by the FDA. They state that there is absolutely ab-solutely no evidence that this amino acid promotes weight loss. This is just another case in point that nutrition, so vital to all of us, needs some close scrutiny before we accept all of the "health food" claims and waste money that most of us can ill afford.
