Show Orem-Geneva Times- "May 29, 1980 Citizens To Meet With Council Beautification Contest Begins Orem residents are invited to enter the 1980 Orem Beautification Contest and assist in making Orem a more beautiful and clean city. Sponsored Spon-sored by the Orem City Beautification Committee, Com-mittee, the purpose of the program is to encourage en-courage landscape improvements throughout the city. There are two entry classifications: home and business. Select as a project anything that will definitely improve the landscape appearance of your home or business. Deadline for entries is July 31, and judging will be the week of August 11 through 16. A five member panel of judges, citizens of Orem, will visit each project. They will size up the over-all appearance and look for indications of good planning. They will consider the selection, grouping, group-ing, and placement of plant materials. Awards will be presented at the City Center Aug. 26. A first and second price, of $75 and $50, respectively, will be awarded in each of the two classifications. Additional entry blanks are available at the City Center. For further information, call Connie Andersen (224-1828) or Bruce Smith (225-6890). The Orem City Planning Board is recommending that 1400 South be extended extend-ed through the property at 400 West, 400 West be extended from 1300 South to 2000 South and that 300 West at 1400 South be tied into the frontage front-age road which will parallel par-allel 1300 south diagonal. This will make 1400 South a thorofare from the diagonal. diag-onal. 1400 ' South now deadends dead-ends at LUS church-owned property at 300 South. This parcel, intended for a new stake center, will be sold as Sharon West Stake has determined it is not a proper location. Area property owuers met with Robert Burgi of the Stake Presidency and Tricia Stevens of the Planning Plan-ning Board on May 10. Burgi is also a member Those present signed a petition that the property be sold only for residential residen-tial use. The majority also protested the extension of 1400 South because of the increased automobile traffic it will bring to the street, as well as 300 West, and 1600 South. Fears were also expressed ex-pressed that the proposed changes will commercialize commercial-ize 1400 South. Another meeting of property-owners was held Tuesday May 13 to consider con-sider alternatives to the proposed rezonings. These will be presented present-ed by John Paulson to the City Planning Board on June 3, 7:30 p.m. A large delegation of concerned home-owners plan to be present. These same residents disagreed with city planning plan-ning policy several months ago over the re-zoning re-zoning of 1300 South and Main street to permit the building of a high rise office structure. The increase is 4.1 percent and was effective May 20, 1980. It allows for a 15.5 percent return on equity. Mountain Fuel filed for a $12.4 million general increase Jan. 4. The $10.5 million figure approved by the commission was reached in a stipulation between Mountain Fuel and the Utah Division , of Public Utilities. Mountain Fuel said it did not agree with the adjustments made by the Division of Public Pub-lic Utilities, but accepted the lower figure in order or-der to have the increase take effect immediately, rather than be postponed by further lengthy hearings. HERE'S WHY: 3 COURTS MUST HAVE MORE SPACE The courts play a vital role in our free society. A courtroom is a place of reverence, rever-ence, dignity and respect. However, because be-cause of increased case loads, conditions condi-tions in our courtrooms and court-related court-related facilities are congested and noisy. Criminal cases increased by 25 last year alone. Civil cases have doubled in the last ten years. There are no holding facilities at the court house for criminals while on trial, creating unsafe conditions condi-tions for the public. When County departments are combined com-bined in the new building, plans are to convert 2 2 floors of the present building build-ing for use by the courts and their support sup-port facilities.
