Show k ; ' . J urem High School Forensic Team presented the Mother's Day program for Orem Kiwanis members and their wives May 12. Orem Students Entertain Kiwanis Club Members The Orem Kiwanis Club, May 12, honored mothers in a special program pro-gram presented by the Orem High School Foren-slcs Foren-slcs team led by Mr. Steve Bringhurst, debate coach and instructor. Four students who participated were: Allison Gappmayer, a senior and Sterling Scholar recipient who gave an impromptu speech on the meaning of a Mother; Scott Szabi demonstrated oratory in a talk on self-image; Jackie Clegg, a state champion in extemporaneous extemporan-eous speaking, expounded on the pros and cons of the Equal Rights Amendment; Amend-ment; and Gary Swenson, also a Sterling Scholar recipient, did a humorous interpretation entitled, "Wonderful Wino." Their talents were well demonstrated as they represented others on the forensics team which has won the state's highest honors. The wives of the Kiwanis members attended attend-ed the noon luncheon as specially honored guests. Four new members were inducted and welcomed wel-comed with their wives into the club. They were Paul Kennedy, a realtor at Ridgewood Real Estate; Es-tate; Jerry Jakeman, developer and president of Music Art West and other related companies for the printing and dissemination dis-semination of music by local musical talent; Greg Madsen, attorney; and Larry Ferguson, a realtor. real-tor. The Hope of America Awards are being presented pre-sented throughout the elementary schools in the Orem area these coming weeks to the outstanding sixth grade students in each school by Kiwanis members. Curtis Brinkman is slated to be the speaker at the next Kiwanis lun-cheon lun-cheon May 19. There will be no mectinK on Monday, May 26, due to the Memorial Day holiday. Fat Play Runs Today Fat can be beautiful claim Westmore Elementary Elemen-tary students! Mr. Hall's, Mr. Hamblin's and Mrs. Hansen's classes will be putting on a play to prove this point. "Fat Is Beautiful" is a play about an obese cowboy who, due to social pressure, seeks help in loosing weight at a local health spa. When he achieves his goal, his personality becomes obnoxious ob-noxious and everyone decides they would rather have a happy-go-lucky fat cowboy than a skinny, arrogant ar-rogant one. Performance times are: 9:30 a.m., 12:45 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. at West-more West-more Elementary, 1150 S. Main, Orem, today. Four Students To Be Honored At Recital Four piano students of Mildred Millett will receive special honors for outstanding achievement in music activities at two recitals on Saturday, 2 and 3:30 p.m. at 110 N. Paraside Dr., Orem. The students are Norman Dixon, Christi Bristow, Shela Oaks and Virginia Horrocks. Norman Dixon, Orem, Or-em, received first place in the Varsity Scout Piano Competition, both the Squaw Peak district and in the region and is now preparing to compete in the Tri-state competition. Christi Bristow, of Pavson, took sweep stakes honors in the Huff Piano Competition in the Payson High School. Shela Oaks, Orem, was given honors in the PTA "Reflections" piano composition contest in I-akeridge Junior High and also in the city and region. In the state contest, con-test, she was given first place which entitles her to become a national entrant. en-trant. Virginia Horrocks, Orem, received first place honors for her song composition at Orem Junior High and perfor-ed perfor-ed her winning piece at the Junior High School.
